Namdroling Monastery belongs to Sangha Community, where Buddha’s preachings are preserved intact for worldwide propagation. This monastery was founded by His Holiness, Pema Norbu Rinpoche. Home to 5000 monks and nuns, this monastery is known as a centre for pure upholding of the teachings of Buddha.

Currently, the Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery is one of the largest teaching centres of Nyingmapa, which is a lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in the world. Besides, this monastery also features a retreat centre, which was opened in 1985. At this retreat centre, thirty monks have undergone an intensive three-year retreat.

Every year in the autumn season, Pema Norbu Rinpoche gives instructions on Ngondro, Tsa Lung and Dzogchen, from the Namcho cycle of Terton Mingyur Dorje. This one month retreat can be attended only by people of Buddhism faith.

I found my share of peace at this place. This has multiple monasteries where prayers are being offered. Travellers should come to this place with some time in hand so that they can soak the positive energy of this place

"Serene, calm and beautiful experience"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Feb 23, 2017
This was the high water mark of my Coorg trip. Located in Kushalnagar near Coorg, this monastery is a large teaching establishment for Buddhist monks. It is a beautiful place with Buddhist flags fluttering all around. It is best to visit the place during prayer times, which is a great experience. The chants of the monks in the cavernous prayer hall create an atmosphere of serenity. The prayer hall itself has large idols of the Bodhisattvas and the walls are dotted with the stories from the Jataka tales, depicting various stages in the life of Buddha.

Definitely a place to be if you are into Art and Heritage. Its vast and splendid and extremely beautiful. Its so peaceful inside the temple, you can sit and meditate. The monuments, the huge idols, the paintings, the carvings are all very beautiful.
There was no entry fee though you have to pay 30 bucks parking charges for 4 wheeler.

"Nice place to visit"

This beautiful monastery in Kodagu valley calls for a must visit. The inside of the monastery hosts huge statues of Lord Buddha and other reverends of Buddhism. The golden statues are huge and majestic and leave you awe struck. The prayer hall has a huge capacity for monks.

Around the monastery you can really look for some authentic Tibetan cuisines. I tasted some of the best thukpa and momos of my life. There are some pretty knick knack shops to collect souvenir from, the shops are run by the friendly monks.

Beautiful ambiance. Quiet and clean. Parking available. Not much of a walk from the parking. A decent vegetarian restaurant is located close to the parking. Food is good and very reasonable. Worth visiting.

"Monastery takes you back to a different time, place"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Apr 19, 2016
The place is a few kilometres away from Coorg. You can spend around 2 hours at the place and cover nearly everything that is important to cover.

Activities: This is an ideal place for kids aged above 10 yrs. If you have babies, plan to carry a stroller as there is a lot of walking that needs to be done to experience the outer area beyond the boundaries of the Monastery.

Camera type: It might be worthwhile to dustoff your handycam or digital camera if you have these. Mobile cams may not be able to capture the views with great clarity.

NOTE: If you plan to stay for a night in the guest house at the Golden Temple (local name of the temple), you will need to apply for Protected Area Permit ("PAP") issues by GoI. You may want to visit the website of Namdroling for more details.
