Namdroling Monastery is a popular destination of tourists visiting Talacauvery (Talakaveri), which is located at Bylakuppe town of Coorg District of Karnataka. Bylakuppe is considered among the largest Tibetan settlements in India.
Namdroling Monastery holds the distinction of being the largest teaching centre of Nyingmapa monastery in the world. The monastery was established in the year 1963 by Pema Norbu Rinpoche. The monastery was formerly known by the name ‘Thegchog Namdrol Shedrub Dargyeling’. It was later re-named as Namdroling Monastary by Dalai Lama.
The Padmasmabhava Buddhist Vihara or the Golden Temple, established in 1999, is its prime attraction which abodes three 18 m high idols of Buddha covered in gold. The Golden Temple is famous for its murals and frescoes depicting Tibetan mythology.
