| Nanda Devi Temple |

This 1000
year old temple dedicated to Nanda Devi, the patron goddess of the Chand
Dynasty, is actually situated within the antechamber of a Shiva Temple.
Built in the typical Kumaoni architectural style of stone temples, the Nanda Devi temple is a magnificent monument that has a
stone amalaka or crown which is encircled by a wooden roof. Intricate stone
carvings of almost life like statues and images grace the surrounding walls.
Every year during August, the temple comes alive for the entire tenure of the Nanda
Devi Fair. People come from far and away to participate in the festival. The
temple complex resounds to the drum beats and energetic dance steps performed
by groups of young and women.
