"Must ride!" new review

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted 1 week ago
Great ride through emerald country; tickets available only 30 min before departure - though advance booking through IRCTC is possible; strategic seating would allow great view of the valley and tea gardens; return trip could be by bus as trips are limited in frequency.

"Must Experince NMR Journey" new review

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
Nilgiri Mountain Railways is the heart of Nilgiris. Without NMR, Ooty, Coonoor would have no value. Journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty is Breath taking.

This mini train is hauled by 106 yrs. Old X Class, Oil fired Swiss made Steam engine. Actually, Indian Railways has modified this Loco recently. Initially, it was coal fired. To reduce the labour and cost, coal burner is modified with Oil burner.

Mettupalayam to Coonoor is hauled by Steam Loco, Coonoor to Ooty is hauled by Bio Diesel engine. Mettupalayam to Coonoor is more scenic and more exciting with many bridges and tunnels. Book your tickets in advance. It is hard to get Unreserved ticket during season.

"Book tickets well in advance to avoid undue stress"

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted 1 month ago
The first suggestion is to book tickets well in advance to avoid undue stress. According to trip, we decided to go for METTUPALAYAM to OOTY ride at 7. 40. We booked 1st class tickets which has benefits of window to rear which may provide better photography chance. The scenery is absolutely stunning, the best part of journey is from Mettupalayam to Coonoor by steam the second part by diesel engine. Train stops at 4 stations where we can enjoy scenery, examine steam engine and take photos. At one station we can get down and enjoy, food is not available in the train available in the stations.

"Superb experience"

This train is a small train but not very small, only the number of boggies are less. It will take you till Coonoor. It is the cheapest way. Ooty station itself is very well-maintained. Therein moves through few small tunnels. It's very nice experience.

"Good to experience the joyful toy train ride"

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted 2 months ago
We boarded this train from Coonoor and travelled till Ooty and the visit to ooty is "Incomplete without this Toy Train ride". If you have travelled in the toy train then half of your sightseeing of Ooty is already done. The "Experience was really good". The tunnels and bushes around makes the ride a memorable one. The fee for this is 1500 per head.

Travelling in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is not only a journey but also a memorable time which gave me all types of feelings. Travelling in the train with world heritage steam locomotives gives us the wonderful moment. Passing through the forest, chill air, slow motion, mountain ranges, wild animals, water falls, green everywhere Wow, just come and feel it.

"Beautiful journey in a Toy train"

We were 6 people in that train and the scene outside the window was wonderful. You can find beautiful trees and mountains filled with life. There were many naughty Monkeys too. I still remember the scene which I saw when the train stopped for half an hour. It was mesmerizing. If you are going to Ooty then must travel in this.

"Beautiful, scenic and totally worth the ride (short one)"

Planning for the mountain railway wasn't easy. If you really want an assured seat, you need to book 1-2 days in advance. You can get the unreserved one at last minutes notice but would need to be prepared to stand. We took the trip from Lovedale to Ooty and back ( we were earlier planned for Coonoor, that just needed us to have almost 3/4 of the day just for this considering the train goes just 3 times a day). Once on the train though, the ride was fantastic. Phenomenal scenic routes, valleys, tunnels, lakes, farmlands, local flavours. It goes at a very low speeds so you actually take in every small detail of what's going around you.

I probably wouldn't go on it for a couple of years, but someone who hasn't done the rail, definitely a must do.

"A wonderful experience of train journey"

A Beautiful experience with a quaint landscape overlooking the valleys and hills of Ooty and the train journey was so wonderful. It was a wonderful experience that we had and we enjoyed it tremendously.

We felt that it should go on and on as it was a wonderful experience with all the tunnels, the trees, the slopes, valleys and the mountain tops as well as the mountainous terrain on which the railway was built was also amazing....!!

The bogies/coaches were so ancient and so exquisitely well preserved so that the trains could run in the manner intended with the right No. Of people.

The tunnels were exciting as everyone would scream and shout and take the wonder of the darkness inside as well as outside and the quaint old lamps of the train would come on, as if they were eyes opening up that made the whole route so enjoyable.

The view was great as the houses with the fields, the hilly cottages nestled with the trees and the cattle grazing as well as the logs of wood being stacked by the tractors and the houses with people all looking like dwarfs was exciting as if we were looking into a fairyland due to the train chugging out along the hillside. We also passed another train ready to go into the Hills just before the station of Coonoor and our train was getting ready to stop at the next railway station of Coonoor...!!

Overall a wonderful and lovely experience in the Nilgiri Mountain Railways....!!
