"Hyped attraction" new review

It was one of the worst experience. We could not get confirmed ticket despide booking a month before. One will not get tickets because there is only one train with about 120 seats) to Mettupalayam. The much hyped steam engine train starts from Coonoor. From Ooty-Coonoor its the regular diesel engine. We waited for more than 2hrs at the general ticket counter. The ticket counter opened only for a short period of time (less than 15 mins) and was closed saying tickets exhausted. We could see heated argument between railway staff and tourists. We were frightened to see a railway police hitting a tourist to bleed.

"Nice, fairly tale-like experience"

You have to stand in queue to buy tickets, you can also buy through Indian Railways website. Three-four compartments in all, made just like narrow gauge toy trains in Shimla and Darjeeling, but this is meter gauge, which is bigger than narrow gauge. Still one of those very few, perhaps kept only in heritage sites.

"A must-do thing while tour of Ooty"

  • 7.00/7

NMR (NILGIRI MOUNTAIN RAILWAY) is one of the best examples of engineering inducted by British while they ruled over here. A 46 km journey up the hill gives a splendid view of steep terrains, waterfall, picturesque mountains and many more eye pleasing sceneries. As the total distance of 46 km is covered in about 5 hours, it is advisable to be patient and enjoy the nature. Also the NMR is amongst those which have been declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Journey commences from Martupalyam Railway Station to Ucatamund (Ooty) Railway Station via Coonoor and the most amazing leg of this complete journey for me was MTP-ONR, where it runs on Steam Engine.

During summer vacations, seats in this train get totally full with heavy wait list. It advisable to book the seat well in advance. People can book tickets online too.

"The best way to travel from Mettupalayam to Ooty"

  • 7.00/7

Traveling by Nilgiri Mountain Railway is something that you should not miss out. It is worth more than the money you use to purchase the ticket. It is the oldest running train in the world and if you are travelling to Ooty I personally suggest you to use this mode of transport.

Suggest you to go in a group which will make it more memorable as you will be going past around 6 tunnels and through the greeneries of Nilgiris forest which you will never forget.

"Toy train ride"

  • 7.00/7

You can take toy train for short journey from Ooty to Coonoor. The train runs every two hours so be on schedule so you don't miss the train. The first class ticket cost Rs. 100/- whereas the general ticket is Rs. 10/- per person. This train will offer you many scenic views of Nilgiri Mountain range and city. Turns and Tunnels add fun to the travel.

It is memorable journey. It would be good if you go by toy train while going to Ooty. If not at least come by toy train while coming down. It is wonderful experience. Better reserve tickets a month/2 months before.

"Heritage train which is well-maintained"

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted Mar 18, 2015
This is the heritage train and well-maintained. The route is wonderful to experience. But the train engine is not steam ( for the route of Ooty To Coonoor ). Clean train and rail track. On the route one can experience many tunnels. Overall, good experience.
