"Nobody did expect when the..."

  • Posted Mar 29, 2008
Nobody did expect when the owner bought an old Portuguese home on the river bed of Baga and turn it into one of the finest resorts in Calangute/Baga beach. The moment you enter you it you would fall in love with the setup. You would find lot of plants and flowers which gives the resort a different look. The rooms are spacious with a separate terrace/sitout facing the river. The restaurant/bar is excellent with some great cocktails and fish dishes. This place is a fav among foreigners and locals as well. The staff are well behaved.

Best Experience: There is live music every Wed and Sat nights which is an instant hit with the regulars of the place. The music is conducted by people who are passionate abt music and not just for money.

Worst Experience: The front office staff seem to care less about Indians. A simple gesture like welcome and thank you is not seen, however for firangs they would go the extra mile to make them comfortable. Looks like they still live in the pre independence era.

"We stayed at this homely..."

  • Posted Feb 11, 2008
We stayed at this homely resort near Baga beach for 2 nights. The staff is very friendly and cooperative, food is great and the comforts at the resort are good. It is value for money. They could consider giving some more choice of non-veg dishes in the complimentary breakfast. Visitors may please note that they do not have room service. However, their coffee shop is a nice place to sit and munch while reading the day\'s newspaper.

Best Experience: Our waiter at the restaurent (his name is Munna) would sometimes get confused and bring someone elses order to our table or take our order to someone elses table, yet he would always have a smile that could cheer up any customer!

Worst Experience: There is nothing that can be rated as worst during our stay at Cavala, however we felt the taxi we booked back to the airport charged us a little on the higher side since the hotel booked it for us. We had to wait for a while during check-in for our room to get cleaned. The service needs to be quicker. They are a bit laid back.

"cavala has an old world..."

  • Posted Oct 12, 2007
cavala has an old world charm that's hard to miss. we had a lovely four day holiday there and loved every minute of it. the food is awesome, the rooms are reasonable and the place has a great vibe that gives you your space. there is another part of cavala on the other side of the road (our advice? you are better off on the main side, which also houses the reception) which has a swimming pool in it but we never checked it out. when you are in goa, who needs a pool when you can have the whole beach.. the hotel staff are friendly and helpful, they had their own scooties, which we could hire from them instead of hunting for one, ourselves. cavala's famous retro saturday night was something we couldnt check out but we will be checking in, next time for sure! a great stay, highly recommended!

Best Experience: every meal was an extended session of gluttony

Worst Experience: nothing i can remember, really

"It was Off-season, end of..."

  • Posted Aug 2, 2007
It was Off-season, end of July. Yet decided to go...assumed we will be the only tourists around. Stayed at Cavala-coz it was close to the famous Baga beach. The rates were inviting. 2 AC Suite'+poolside- cost us 1800 each with breakfast. The hotel did have more occupants. Quaint looking building...which had creepers flowing on the walls outside, gives it a character. The room was a blessing, simple, elegant and spacious. Nothing lavish about the place, but it makes you feel at home and all the basic facilities in the room. Most important the bathroom was neat and clean. The suite is not connected to the main hotel building, but across the road. So total privacy and peaceful. The pool was cleaned everyday. Did notice a person clean and scrub the surrounding for almost half a day. Impressive eh! The breakfast here was good and filling, not a buffet, but a fixed menu. Either English or Indian. Better to stick to English, its Goa, you cant expect them to make the best of aloo paratas and puri bhaji. The omelets are great. I like the way they served fruit on the plate. Split banana with fork & knife! Of course there were other fruits but this one is a killer! Saturday nights- it’s Live Retro Music. We just wandered in around 8pm and were stopped by the inmates saying the tables are booked. We were surprised, its off-season, who' going to be here...and the bookings happened a week in advance!! We still hung around the place hoping somebody would cancel, but no luck. The place filled up in no time.. What crowd. Mostly foreigners. That place was rocking! Sigh. We had to head out in search of a better place for dinner and music. There was a little hic-up during lunch the next day at Cavala. The fish curry wasn't at its best-first taste of it gave us a very sour feeling. Well it definitely was spoilt! We did make a little noise, how can you go wrong with fish curry in Goa. Well the young chef was sweet enough to come around and listen to us and within the next 15 mins we had steaming, most delicious Goan fish curry on our table. Oh we couldn't stop raving about it. And then he sent around the dessert -Bibinca with ice cream....slurp!! Not to miss.

Best Experience: Must say, Goa is in its best and colorful mood during monsoon. The beach is just a couple of minutes away from Cavala. But it’s not visible from the hotel. The weather was perfect. If you want to get a tan...then wrong season. Another disadvantage, most shacks are closed..only a couple opened. No flea markets. But best part, not much crowd at all..the beach is entirely yours! And clean! There’ Coffee Day, very close to Cavala. Being a coffee freak, this was a boon. People are warm and so non-interfering. The stay at Cavala will be cherished. One of my most memorable holidays. I recommend people who wish to have a relaxed and peaceful holiday to opt for Cavala. Its value for money!

Worst Experience: The hotel refused to confirm the received advance payment by Demand Draft on mail. Had to take a chance and land up there. I wish they were more organised. The cabs are a tad expensive. If it’s arranged by the hotel then add a couple of hundreds to it.

"We had booked a non-AC..."

  • Posted Jun 7, 2007
We had booked a non-AC suite in Cavala for 2 days on 30-31 May-07 at Rs 1260/night. I can say that it was extremely good value for money! We were pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of the suite which had a large drawing area, a decent bed room and the largest bathroom that I have seen in a hotel! In addition, the whole suite was done up with simple and elegant decorations in the form of art works! The easy chairs were extremely comfortable and a mini-bar with beer, juices and mineral water was nice. It also had a piano and my little daughter had a blast with it! The bed side too was nicely done up and the nice blue tiling in the bath gave a soothing look. Though the beach and sea is not visible from the hotel it is located within 5 minutes' walk from the Baga beach. This is a huge advantage as one can go back and forth from the hotel as many times as one likes. There are watersports in the form of parasailing and water-scooters available for the enthusiasts. Boat rides are also available for the less advanturous. For the rest, there is the beach which provides a good bathing option. It is a gentle slope and one can go our quite a far with water upto the hips. However the water tends to get a bit rough at high-tide. One can also walk along the Baga beach for a mile or so to reach Calangute beach where most of the Indian tourists. Baga beach is one of the favourites for the foreigners with ample accommodation options and quite a few beach shacks. However, for the budget traveller I found the food to be quite expensive. At Cavala, on the flip-side the rooms do not have phones to talk to the reception. So one has to pop out and walk across the corridor to the reception. In addition, the resturant menu has limited options and food is a tad expensive. I guess most of the residents do not eat there. I guess the hotel could do well to expand their menu, particularly to Indian cuisines.

Best Experience: 1. The spacious non-AC suite with its decor, furniture and bath! 2. Minutes way from Baga beach. 3. They also have a in house swimming pool (in the AC block) that we did not use. 4. Restaurant food was decent. 5. Booking and reception is decent.

Worst Experience: 1. Resturant menu limited and a tad expensive. Not much Indian cuisine. Looks like it caters more to foreigners. 2. No phones in rooms.
