Ooty Lake is an artificial lake, formed by John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty, in 1824. The artificial lake was formed by the mountain streams flowing down Ooty valley. This lake stretches for about 2.75 km, from the central bus stand, in an irregular ‘L’ shape.
It originally extended up to the present day market and people used to take ferries for going from one side to the other. Over the years, Ooty Lake shrunk in size, giving space for the bus stand, racecourse and a mini garden. The entire lake is surrounded by eucalyptus trees that add to its beauty.
Tourists also visit the nearby Boat House, where they can hire different types of boats. In the month of May, boat pageantry and races are organised at this lake for two days, which attract numerous visitors. At the end of this Boat House, there is a deer park and a children’s park, with toy train.
