Pahalgam, located at the convergence of the Lidder Lake and the Sheshnag Lake, is famous for its natural beauty. Situated at a height of 2,130 m, the destination dates back to the medieval period. This beautiful hill station dates back to the medieval period. Earlier ruled by the Mughals, it later came under the reign of local Hindu kings and became a part of the Kashmir kingdom. Pahalgam continued to enjoy the status of princely state until it got merged into India after independence.
There are several tourist destinations in and around Pahalgam, among which pastures of Baisaran is one of the most popular attractions. Other than this, tourists can also make a visit to Hajan, located on the way to Chandanwari, a popular picnic spot. In addition, Hajan is also a famous shooting location for the Indian film industry.
The destination is abode to eight tiny villages, which are located inside it. One of the most famous villages is Mamal. This village houses an ancient Shiva temple, which dates back to 5th century.
Pahalgam is also a place of important religious significance as it is linked with holy yatra of Amarnath cave. Chandanwari, which is located at a distance of 16 km from Pahalgam, serves as the commencing point of Amarnath yatra. Besides, Pahalgam is a shopping destination too, which is popular for wool products like Gabbas and Namdas, available in plenty in local shops.
Tourists visiting the destination can also engage in innumerable activities such as trekking, which is one of the most popular activities. Pahalgam-Sonamarg Trek and the treks to Chandanwari, Kolahoi Glacier and Sheshnag Lake are quite popular treks of Pahalgam. Apart from trekking, tourists can also enjoy horse riding, fishing and more.
The best time to visit Pahalgam is from May to September and then again from November to February.
