Papanasam village is situated at a distance of about 9.2 km from Swamimalai. It is known for the Papanasam Temple that enshrines the idol of Papavinaseswarar, a form of Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to be constructed during the Pandya period.
As per local belief, Agathiaa Munivar resided here and performed penance. The Gopuarm of this temple has seven steps. The temple has been divided into two segments. One part enshrines the deity Papanasam Perumal, also known as Pazhamurainayagar, Paranjothi Lingar, Vairasalingam and Mukhazhalingar.
The Car Festival and the Floating Festival are the celebrated at a grand scale in the Papanasam Temple. One hundred and eight Shiva Lingams can be seen at this temple.
River Thamiraparni flows near the temple, which is home to several fishes that are believed to be redeemed souls. Numerous devotees visit the site to bathe in this holy river. Several halls and resting houses are found near this site.
