Pillowrocks Homestay, Wayanad
Thonduppali Muttil (P.O), Wayanad
It was a Vacation trip I visited Wayanad. I went there in the month of May 2017. I booked it directly. The location of the hotel was on the outskirt of the main city. The appearance of the hotel was normal and it was on the single road tough to go by car. There was a free parking space. The front office staff was casual and the service was average. The room was normal and no special amenities inside the room. The toilet soap and the pillow covers were not up to the mark. The room rent was costly as it was on the outskirt of the city. There was no towel inside the bathroom. They would not change the pillow covers on regular basis. The food facility was there and the food was delicious. Overall it was a normal stay. They have to improve a lot with the maintenance.

Pillowrocks takes the prize for promising the world and delivering nothing. Booking online carries an inherent risk of not delivering amenities as expected but this was the biggest let down I have faced in the past few years. My wife and I accompanied by close friends (Married couples) made the journey from Bangalore to Wayanad during the last week of December 2015. What we expected was a "gorgeous", "well maintained", "friendly" experience. What we encountered however, was a bundle of horrors. Starting with the last 4-5kms approach to the place. We were not given a clear direction to the place and no this was not a language issue because my friends are from Kerala and speak Malayalam. The directions by the owners was vague and we had to go through a road that had big stones and sharp gravel that threatened to pierce our tires. At several points the car bottomed out on the road. We wanted to stop but the only thing that made us push on were the promises of an idyllic vacation spot that we heard of from the reviews. We finally rattled and shook our way in 1st gear for nearly 40 minutes to the final approach up to the house and one car could not even make that approach. The path was strewn with rocks the size of boulders. One car did make it up the climb and the rest of us walked up. What we saw just shocked up. In the clearing after the path was an old dilapidated building and one of the owners who was expecting us. It was apparent we had got scammed. The rest of the group gathered and even after a long arduous journey no one even wanted to spend the night there. I looked around and I could not find a generator/inverter so in the night when the power would go we would be completely in the dark in the middle of nowhere. The man's wife or at least we think she was his wife was in a house at the other end of the path and she was nowhere to be seen. We spoke with to the man in the house and he talked to her on the cell but at no point did she come up. We had ladies with us also so I don't think that she did not want to argue with just an all guy group. Some of our group went into the house and came out shaking their heads. This place was wrong! After a few frantic calls we found a resort 10 kms away from this hell hole and we requested the owner to fund back our advance amount. As one would expect he flat denied and continued arguing with us. It was almost 6 in the evening and we saw no point in spending a second there and as we pulled back the lady owner finally came over and started arguing with us. She told us that we were causing them a loss and we were the ones cheating her! After driving so far this was not what you want to hear especially when you are with wives and family. We got away from there fuming and shocked at the experience. We lost the complete Rs 3000 as the booking amount which the “lovely & friendly couple" refused to give back and then at Rs 1800 for each room in this place we were going to have to shell out Rs 10, 800 for 2 days without other additional expenses. Losing 3k was better than spending another seven or eight thousand for a completely unacceptable stay over the next 2 days. We have all stayed in home stays and while you don't get people running around catering to your whims and fancies you do normally get a good experience with good home food and basic elements in place. This level of service at this price is not acceptable at all.
