Rajaji National Park is part of three districts of Uttarakhand, namely Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal. Covering an area of 820 sq. km, this national park was formed by merging three wildlife sanctuaries of Chilla, Motichur and Rajaji in 1983. This park is inhabited by 23 species of mammals and 315 species of birds.
The park is home to the largest population of elephants in entire Uttarakhand state. Besides elephants, one can also catch a glimpse of Bengal tiger, leopard, striped hyena, sloth bear, sambhar and wild boar. Himalayan yellow throated marten, jackal, barking deer and Indian hare can be found in the park.
This park is also inhabited by a large population of Himalayan black bear, king cobra, Indian langur, Indian porcupine and python. Avian species that can be seen in this park include pea fowl, barbets, woodpeckers, pheasants and kingfishers. During the winter months, several migratory bird species can also be seen in the park.
Great Pied Hornbill, Himalayan Pied Kingfisher and the fire tailed sunbird are other bird species that can be spotted. Tourists visiting this park can enter the premises from various gates like Ramgarh, Mohand, Motichur, Ranipur, Chilla, Kunao and Laldhang.
