Rajamalai National Park is a must-visit at Munnar. Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park is situated in Devikulam of Munnar. It is situated about 15 km away from Munnar town at a base elevation of about 2000 m above sea level.

In its earlier days, Eravikulam National Park was managed by the former Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company. It was acquired by the Government of Kerala in 1971 and gave it the title of Wildlife Sanctuary in 1975. It was declared a National Park in 1978.

Eravikulam National Park consists of patches of Shola forests which are interspersed with rolling grasslands on a sprawling 97 sq km. It has the largest untouched patch of Shola – grassland mosaic when compared to other Shola-grassland vegetation in the Western Ghats.  Eravikulam National Park also abode Anamudi, is the highest peak (2690 m) in the peninsular India.

The park has three sections – Core Area, Buffer Area and Tourism Area.  Visitors to the National Park have access only to the Tourism Area which comes under Rajamalai region. This area has trekking facilities as well.

Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park is the natural habitat of highly endangered species of mountain goats called Nilgiri Tahr or Nilgiri Ibex (Hemitragus hylocrius). Tourists visiting Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park can find small herds of Nilgiri Tahr grazing along the grasslands. Nilakurinji plants, rare species limited to the hill ranges of Munnar, can be found along the hill sides of this national park.

Eravikulam National Park is also home to species like Nilgiri marten, ruddy mongoose, small clawed otter, dusky striped squirrel, atlas moth, elephants, sambar, gaur, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, etc.  Visitors are not allowed in to Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park during monsoon.

This is Nature Park with very different experience. It is scenic place on the hill with variety of animals. The place itself is so nice that one can spend whole day here. The arrangements made by the govt are very good to make you comfortable.

"Must visit place enroute to Munnar"

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted Aug 13, 2014
It is a must visit place for any traveller in Munnar. It is nearly ten Kilometre from City Centre down towards Coimbatore route. The price of the ticket is Rs.75 (includes a to-fro ride to the Top point where they would leave us and ask us to go for a walk further upwards near about one kilometre which was really an amazing place and exciting too. We could not find much animals except deers crossing the roads. They are very strict with the things you carry, especially plastics and food items. They would anyway make a check before boarding you to those mini buses. The view from the top was amazing. This place is pretty much recommended.

"This sanctuary is an abode for Nilgiri Langur"

  • 7.00/7
  • Posted Aug 11, 2014
The sanctuary is an abode for Nilgiri Langur. The trip is provided by a bus drive from the government to the top of the hills. It is a scenic place. It is mostly covered by mist and when you will walk from there for a stretch of two kilometre up hills, you can see Nilgiri Langurs protected grazing behind the fence.

"Mountainous place with a rich diversity of natural habitat"

  • 6.50/7
  • Posted Jul 26, 2014
The best time to visit the place will be from September to February. The area is actually a mountainous place with a rich diversity of natural habitat. It is the natural habitat of the endangered species Nilgiri Thar. Evening time may be the best time to visit.
