Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a major tourist attraction of Mysore. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a small island on the River Cauvery which is home to many indigenous and migratory avian species.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, located about 5 km from Srirangapatna and 19 km from Mysore, spreads over 57 hectares of land. Ranganathittu was formed as a result of the construction of a dam across the River Cauvery in the 1600s.

There are six small islands at Ranganathittu on River Cauvery, which in turn became a haven for the avian species. In 1940, Ranganathittu was declared a protected area by the Maharaja of Mysore due to the persuasion of the famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a nesting and breeding centre of birds like cormorants, white ibis, spoon-billed storks, open-billed storks, painted storks, white-necked storks, herons, terns, etc. Ranganathittu is also home to other species like bonnet macaques, palm civets, common mongoose, marsh crocodiles, etc.

Visitors can take a boat ride around the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary to get a closer look at the avian as well as reptilian species. The birds are found here in large numbers from June to October, which is also the peak tourist season at this sanctuary.

"Great place to see Birds sanctuary."

  • 6.0/7

We had visited this when we went to Mysore and we really had great experience and I should definitely say that this place won't upset you or your kids at all. Here you need to take the boat ride to enjoy the birds and we have seen different varieties of birds and the most surprised visit was crocodiles around 4 crocodiles but they don't disturb the boat ride.
The road View to reach the sanctuary is also really nice filled with greenary and it's photography place.

"Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary"

One of best places to watch migratory birds. The boats to go round the lakes are motorized to preserve the place in its natural beauty. We saw birds from Siberia, Australia, to name a few. If I say the names of the birds, it's not worth watching as you may check-in google and close. But these birds are very beautiful from closeup. I will shortly add the photos.

Good place to visit. Well maintained and neatly arranged everything. It is close to Mysore around 12 km only. We can see many verities of birds from across the globe. Many birds coming from south and North america. Also more than 200 crocodile in this place. It is amazing and not attack any tourists. Entry fee per head 60 and boating for 60 Rs respectively. Need good camera while visiting this place.

"Very nice place to visit for nature lovers, bird watchers and photographers"

  • 5.0/7

The place is very good and well-maintained. The main attraction is the boat ride where they take us to see the migratory birds and huge Crocodiles. The boat ride seems pretty short but considering that these are rowing boats we must understand the limitations. A good place for any kind of group, family or friends close to Bangalore.

"Worth the visit"

We visited the same during the month of November 2015. It was a wonderful trip, which was well coordinated and scheduled prior to our visit to KRS. It's on the way, the area is huge and full of greenery. For those interested, they can opt in for boating too. It gives a great opportunity for us to see croc's lazying out on rocks. Not many of the birds were sighted. There is also a observatory on top. Overall a different experience.

"A must visit for the birders and nature lovers"

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, situated on the banks of River Kaveri is the largest bird sanctuary in Karnataka. It is located just 3 kms away from the historic town Srirangapatna and 130kms from Bangalore. The place is well connected. You can get numerous buses from Bangalore. All buses going to Mysore will stop at Srirangapatna. And it is also well connected by train. From Srirangapatna you can take an auto and reach the sanctuary.

The Sanctuary is home to around 170 species of birds. Painted stork, Asian open-bill stork, Common Spoonbill, Woolly-necked stork, Black-headed ibis, Lesser whistling duck, Indian shag, Stork-billed kingfisher, Egret, Cormorant, Oriental darter, Night heron, Great stone plover, River tern, Pied Kingfisher and the list goes on. The sanctuary is also home to Mugger crocodile also known as March crocodile. And you can find flying fox, mongoose, palm civets and some other mammals. Boating is the best way to explore the place and watch birds. Best season is from September to January.

"Not just another Nature park, its Par Excellence"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Oct 20, 2015
Until this review, I had only heard of Ranganathittu and that too for getting inundated in floods whenever KRS was opened during monsoon and how birds were getting affected and I would think, how accessible this place must be with regular floods every year??

But I was in for a surprise when I visited this place in 33rd year of my life. Why do I mention this, you ask? Because I had to ask myself, being a Bangalorean, what took me so long??!!!

Except the last 200 meters, the road to Ranganathittu is good from Both Bengaluru and Mysuru. Once you take the ticket and cross the check post you drive into a different world. Here, I would like to mention, this is by far the best maintained sanctuary among all I have visited in India till date.

The gardens, the walk ways, the small hanging bridge, the watch towers, the small pond filled with lotus flowers, the pergolas (gazebos). All maintained clean, trimmed and well painted.

The only off putting thing was apathy shown by us, travellers (I include myself because quite a few years back, in my childhood and teens, I too a bit negligent). In spite of requests, cautions and warnings, a few plastic bottles, covers, beer cans have found their way into the eco zone.

The only area of improvement are the facilities (dining and washroom). That's why I rate this place 4.

Coming to the main attraction. The Boat ride into the world of Birds and Crocs! To maintain the sanctity of the area, motor boats have not been permitted. The boats are manual ones and people are taken around the sanctuary in batch of 10-12. The oarsman doubles up as a guide and good guides they are. The ride ranges from 30-40 minutes and takes you close to the islets, where you can see crocs resting and birds of various species, sizes and ages chirping and hooting around.

One can see Storks, Cranes and many other birds flying, feeding, nesting attending to their young ones. It's a fascinating world! We were lucky to see a Croc hunt quite close to our boat. It came from nowhere, dived and caught a fish and then swam away oblivious to the stares of all the people on our boat.

The surroundings are picturesque!
