We started summer vacation for kids and to unwind from work at River Tern. We started early morning from Bangalore and it took good 4 hours to reach the Resort We're pleasantly surprised with the location, pollution free place. Each of the cottages are facing the river, big size & well organized. I believe that's the trade mark of Jungle Lodges resorts Professional staff and yummy food! Be prepared to add few pounds with the non-stop and complimentary food served at River Tern Lodge Bad news is that you'll find jungle animals if you're really very lucky! You'll certainly come across international and rare birds, deer and few elephants. You got to be lucky to see lion, tiger or leopard.
The place is amazing. Its about 350 kms from Bangalore. We traveled by train to Birur junction which is about 45km from RiverTern lodge. We'd asked the RiverTern guys for transportation from Birur. They sent a vehicle, on time, which carried us to the lodge. It was about an hour's drive. They charged 750/- for the transport. For those who want to travel themselves, you can take a bus from Birur to a town called Tharikere. From Tharikere you get private buses or Auto Rickshaws to a village called Lakkavalli. From Lakkavalli, RiverTern lodge is about 3 kms and can be traveled in an Auto Rickshaw Located on the banks for backwater lake (caused by Bhadra dam), the place has an amazing view. You can Google for the pictures. Cottage Number 4, 5 and 6 have the best view from their balcony. Best season is from January to before monsoon. This time the water level in the dam goes down, creating islands in the lake. These islands become home to the RiverTern birds that migrate from Michael. The boat trip from the lodge takes you to these islands and you can see thousands of birds flying all around you. Its an amazing experience and can't be put in words. They also offer jungle safari as a part of the package. The jungle is filled with dense trees, making it difficult to spot animals. Although we did catch a glimpse of some animals. The safari was still worth it for the immense trees and lush greenery. Don't forget to take a picture with the huge 300 year old tree! Ask the safari driver to take you to backwater region in the jungle, the view is amazing and the chances of seeing animals is more there cos its an open area. I strongly suggest you to carry a pair of binoculars if you have one. Take the boat trip in the morning and the jungle safari in the evening cos jungle safari takes long (2 hours or so) and it might be sunny (and hot) before you're back. The food was one of the best I've had anywhere. They serve it warm and have variety. They also serve snacks in the evening; you won't get anything to eat other than at designated time. There are no shops (or anything! Nearby. They do have cold drinks though. I suggest you take some chips or snacks with you. The rooms are nicely done, well kept, fitted with A/Cs and also have a tea/coffee maker. Imaging sipping a hot cup of coffee sitting in the balcony, overlooking the lake and the islands. For the couples: the lake is visible from the bed too! (At least from Cottages 4, 5 and 6). The package costs 5500/- per day per cottage (for a couple). It includes stay, breakfast, lunch, dinner, jungle safari and boating We had to checkout 11AM but our return train from Birur was in the evening. So we checked out from the room and decided to spend more time at the resort. They said they will arrange a taxi in the evening and lunch in the afternoon for us and we could hang out around the resort. We utilized the time by trying out water sports. They have canoeing, rowing and wind surfing (only on windy days). We opted for canoeing and rowing. You must take one of these; the view from inside the lake is breathtaking. If you have binoculars, don't forget to carry it here! Rowing and canoeing cost Rs. 200-250 hour per head. It also includes access to water trampoline they've setup a few meters from the shore. You must try the trampoline too! The food cost us 200/- per head for the extra day The hotel staff was very courteous and helpful. If you need anything like medicine or something from shops, they can get it for you from the nearby Lakkavalli town. Overall it was a great trip and would definitely recommend to everyone

In visited River Turn Resort in Shimoga. I visited in March 2014 and stayed for three days. It was an official trip. Overall I liked the stay. The forest environment and the natural surrounding are very good, and it is near to river. This resort is easy to locate. They have river rafting, jungle safari and water safari. It was a good adventurous trip. They have south Indian food. Their package included food and it was good. I stayed in an individual cottage, which was like a hut and it is maintained. I did not find it expensive and the staff were friendly and helpful. The resort provides all basic amenities. The only problem I found was that the AC in my room was leaking. I would recommend this resort to my friends also.
