The Royal Calcutta Golf Club or RCGC is the 2nd oldest golf club in the world after The Royal and Ancient at St. Andrews. It was established in 1829 and in 1911; King George V and Queen Mary conferred the title of ‘Royal’ on the course, in order to commemorate their visit. In fact, the Royal Calcutta Golf Club was the first ever golf course in India and also, outside Great Britain.
Previously, it was situated near the Calcutta Airport and was popularly called ‘Royal’, as a synonym of the golf game. In 1910, the 18-hole golf course was shifted to Tollygunge and it still resides there. The golf course mostly has a flat terrain and comprises natural water hazards and small greens. The golf club offers tennis courts, swimming pool, bowling and bar and dining areas. The months of October to March is considered the best time for playing golf.
