Rudraprayag District receives its name from Lord Shiva, who is believed to have appeared here in his Rudra or angry avatar to bless Narad Muni, who prayed to Lord Shiva to master the ultimate secret knowledge of music. The city of Rudraprayag is located on the convergence of the rivers Mandakini and Alakananda, which is around 34 km from Srinagar.
Initially, Rudraprayag was not a district and was a part of the districts of Tehri and Chamoli, but in 1997, considering the valley of Kedarnath and some portions of the districts Pauri and Tehri, the new district of Rudraprayag was formed.
The temples of Jagdamba and Shiva of this city bear immense religious importance. Moreover, the city of Rudraprayag offers two distinct routes to Kedarnath and Badrinath Dham. This region with its glaciers and lakes strikes a balance between natural beauty and religious significance.
