Sabarna Sangrahashala Overview

Ranked 90 of 772 sightseeing in Kolkata

The unique museum of Sabarna Roy Choudhury family is known as Sabarna Sangrahashala. It is located in Barisha and was established in 2003. The Sabarna Roy Choudhury Paribar Parishad developed the museum to cater the needs of research scholars and students and to create awareness about the preservation of historical source materials.

For the purpose of aiding the scholars, the museum is inclusive of a reading hall and library. This family museum houses some of the rarest documents and articles, including Kabilatipatras that dates back to 18th and 19th centuries. The most important of them is the one that dates back to 1794 and contains the signature of the legendary Kavi Ramprasad Sen.

The museum also contains antique manuscripts, maps, books, pictures and tickets. It also houses a number of items such as a huge earthen rice pot of 1840, metal candle stand of 1795, metal Hookah of 1878, grinding wheels dating 1845 and various other rare articles. The Numismatic and Philatelic divisions contain some of the rarest stamps, coins and First Day Covers.

The most interesting collection of the museum is the historic Judgement of the Kolkata High Court, regarding the Kolkata Birthday Case and the Expert Committee Report on it. Owing to the facts unleashed by the museum, it has been proved that Job Charnock is not the founder of Kolkata nor the birthday of the city is on 24th August. The facts established that Kolkata was an important religious and trade centre, long before the arrival of the British. The main evidence was the historical lease deed of 1698 that depicts the Right to rent three villages, namely Kalikatah, Sutanti and Govindapuri.

Liked spending time at coins and stamp collection gallery

This museum is pretty essential for Kolkata and its people because it has some important artifacts and documents from the origin of this town. This museum is just a decade of since it is open for public and is situated at Barisha. As I love history I loved spending time over here and trust me Kolkatas history is very interesting; loved spending time at the library. Also liked spending time at coins and stamp collection gallery.
