Shankaracharya Temple is said to be constructed around 200 BC by Jaluka, who was the son of Emperor Ashoka. It is located on the top of Shankaracharya Hill, known as Takht-e-Sulaiman, which is around 1,100 ft above the main city. From the top of this hill, visitors can have a beautiful view of the snow covered mountains of Pir Panjal mountain range.

The temple is constructed on an elevated octagonal plane, which can be easily reached by steps. Tourists can also witness a modern ceiling and Persian inscriptions inside the main temple.

"Temple of Lord Shiv"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 2 months ago
Beautiful serenade and worth visiting. Well guarded by army, Neat and clean and well maintained. Peaceful environment. Highly recommended. 267 stairs to clime but worth it. A place or small cave is nearby the temple where Jagat Guru Shri Shankaracharya meditated. Behind the Lord Shiv temple is Gauri Kund which needs little maintenance. Managed by a young Sikh priest.

"Shankracharya Temple must visit"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 2 months ago
Surrounded by thick Chinar trees, located atop the highest mountain and well secured by is a must visit. We stayed in a house boat near no. 9 which is facing the temple. Yusuf bhai took us in his very stable auto right up to the point near where the steps to the temple begin.
The auto drive was fabulous as we could feel the cool breeze as the mountain is a forest with various species of birds and floerrs in wayy, a delight to watch. The Dal lake view from a few points is so scenic as you can't go past without using your favourite camera there. After climbing many steps you reach the main temple and have darshan of a lord Shiva. The shiv ling is almost a meter high and about 2 feet wide in blue and red shades. The shiv ling was laid by sri shankracharya and I was amazed by the tempmes beauty and the beauty of views below with Dal lake on one side and jhelum river's rivulet on the other. Could see all habitation around the river as it went past curving spectacularly.
Carried back a Chinar tree leaf from the tree at the temple entrance which I have dried in a book (which I used to do as a child) and will haveit framed akong withe the picture of the temple and the tree.

The very known temple of Srinagar kashmir ... We had an taxi to reach there. Temple is located on shankaracharya hill. This temple is also known as jyestheshwara temple .. Very beautyful view we had on the way ... We reached there and make it a point if you also planning to visit this temple better to keep your Mobile phones and camera within the hotel room because temple security does not allow tourist to take Mobile, camera along with them to temple. Temple is approximate 1000 feet up to hil .. When we reached to the top of hill, I it was felling like awesome .. Beautiful view of whole Srinagar could be see from there ... The beauty of kashmir Vally we seen from the top of hill ... Temple is very encient of lord shiva .. Worth visiting.

It's really awesome temple of God Shiva, beautifully build on high valley. You can see beautiful view of Dal lake from here. To reach the temple you have to go from around 250 stairs. The temple is very beautiful and calm. I felt really great to go there. High security, no camera and video graphics allowed in temple.

"The abode of Lord Shiva on top of hill"

If you are capable of climbing 280 sreps, this place is worth visiting. On top of the hill you can have Darshana of a huge Shiv Linga and a panoramic view of Srinagar. A great place to visit and enjoy the amazing view from there. The government has taken care in preserving the sanctity of the place.

"Sankaracharya temple ... Really a pious feel"

  • 5.0/7

Sankaracharya temple lies on top of hill in Srinagar .. As it closes in evening . . So good to visit in morning. As its in sensitive zone .. So vehicles are stopped around 150meters before 300stares of temples start .. On reaching up .. It's architecture matches with kedarnath temple .. Presence of holy shivlinga and its view gives a suttle calmness .. From railing of temple you can enjoy beautiful bird eye view of Srinagar .. So a good place to visit

This Shankaracharya temple is situated on the shankaracharya hill near dal lake. To visit here you have to climb 220 steps. View of dal lake from top is spectacular. You are not allowed to carry mobile & camera to the temple. I would say its a must visit place.

"A good place for a religious person"

  • 5.0/7

Although you find better temples than Shankaracharya temple in Srinagar. You tend to visit this place since Srinagar has not been much surrounded by much of temples and we tend to get inclined towards such an old temple maintained well for so long. You can get a look of the Srinagar city at the top of the temple and find some peace. A piece of advice is not to give money to the priests, since I found most of the priest's in jammu and kashmir to be more of money makers than religiously following the nitya puja.

"Waste of time and money"

Up on the hill this is not a place to chill. Waste of time, waste of money. Only a shiva temple after climbing 180 stairs. Better visit other places like dal lake.

"Best views from the top"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Mar 29, 2016
Don't go by the name 'Hills'. It's quite high up and takes time to reach the top. Then there are at least 100 steps to climb. But once you are up there, the view will mesmerise you. You can virtually see all of Srinagar from every corner.

The place is a heritage temple and has Samadhi of Sri Sankaracharya along with a Shiv Mandir.
