Shantipur is a municipality and city in the district of Nadia in West Bengal. The Daak-Ghar is the main fort of the area and was built by Raja Krishnachandra of Nadia. Shantipur is only 90 kilometers towards the north of Kolkata.
Shantipur and the adjacent Fulia are twin cities very famous for Bengal handloom saree weaving centers. In fact, Fulia and Shantipur sarees are very famous throughout India.
During the 9th century, this place used to be the center for Vedic learning and Sanskrit literature. There are some 125,000 handlooms in the Shantipur-Fulia area, producing some of the best sarees like Tangail, Shantipuri and Jamdani. Besides, tussar, cotton and silk are also woven.
