About Shillong Peak

Shillong Peak is the highest peak of the province of Himalayas, standing at an altitude of 1,965 metre above the sea level. One of the most visited sites of the hill station, this peak provides a breathtaking view of Shillong city and Himalayan ranges. The star-studded night along with the city lights is a treat to witness.

According to historians, Shillong is named after this hill. As per regional mythology, the patron deity 'Leishyllong' has her abode at the hill and protects city against all evils from here. Besides, a sanctum offering curtsy U Shulong is situated at the hill top. During springs, the spiritual pastor of Mylliem offer prayers at the sanctum.

An ideal retreat for visitors, the location also features a radar station of the Indian Air Force. Due to security reasons at the air base, travellers have to surrender their cameras while reaching view-point.

"View of the city from the highest point in town"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Aug 2, 2017
One of the places where one can always go for a drive. One can see the whole city from the peak. You can wear the traditional dresses of the local people ( khasi) called dhara and click pictures for memories. The traditional dresses are bright and in colour. Just the drive from the city to the peak is great because of the naturally beautiful scenery.

"Worth The View"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Jun 22, 2017
The Shillong Peak is one the most breathtaking views you will ever see in your life. Although not easily accessible to all, because it is under the control of the Air Force, one has to take permission to enter the area and follow certain strict guidelines and restrictions. But the drive to the peak as well as the peak itself is worth the minor inconveniences. It feels like you are in the sky, looking at Shillong below you, which is literally true because you are almost 6500 ft above sea-level and can see the entire city of Shillong underneath.

"Ideal picnic spot"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Jun 6, 2017
An ideal picnic spot, 1965 metres above sea level and 10 kms from the city, offers a panoramic view of these country side, and is also the highest point in the State. Obeisance is paid to you Shulong at the sanctum at the peak's summit every springtime, by the religious priest of Mylliem State. In the evening the city lights below appear like a started abyss.

Shillong View Point is about half an hour drive from Shillong city.. It's located inside the Air Force area... Have to get a permission from gate before entering.. You can get a great picturesque view of Shillong from this peak... There are two viewing towers in this peak area.. Telescopes are available for ten rupees at the top for viewing the city... You can dress up in traditional dresses and have a photograph clicked...

"Complete View of Shillong"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Apr 27, 2017
You can have a complete view of Shillong from the peak. The view is breathtaking (but also depicts the rising population and urbanisation). Do keep a two hour slot when visiting Shillong Peak View Point as the military check and pass system recently introduced can consume a lot of time.

"Nice view of Shillong"

  • 4.0/7

At Shillong peak you get a nice view of city and you can click photos. There khasi dress is available on rent at 50 rs per person which you can wear and click fotos of your own or get it printed from them ... If you have to Maharashtra and seen Western Ghats then it would not be a new experience but if you have not been there then may like it ...

"Splendid view of Shillong city .."

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Aug 29, 2016
Situated 1966mts above sea level, it is the highest point of Meghalaya and provides an excellent view of Shillong city and its surroundings. The view point has to be reached through the adjacent Indian Air Force station which ofcourse is under tight security and requires some proof of identity like Voter ID or driving license.
