The
Pothundi Reservoir is on the way to Nelliyampathy from Nenmara. Built on the
Meenchadyppuzha and Padippuzha tributaries of the AyalarRiver,
it has an area of 10,930 hectares. The reservoir offers a picturesque and
serene place to stop on the way up to Nellyampathy. In addition to being a nice
picnic spot, there are also provisions in place for boating. Being higher up in
the valley gives the reservoir a romantic twist due to apparently low flying
monsoon clouds that appear to be a mist on the surface of the water. As the
road climbs up towards Nelliyampathy the sight of the reservoir is stunning
from up above.
Apart
from being a tourist hotspot, the reservoir serves the purpose of irrigation in
the area of Nelliyampathy. What makes the reservoir an engineering marvel is
that it was made without use of cement, but with a mixture of jaggery and quick
lime.
A
must visit for its engineering brilliance and for the picturesque location!
