Located in
the blissfully quiet hill station of Mukteshwar, the Mukteshwar Shiva temple is
situated at an altitude of 2315 m above sea level. One of the numerous rock-cut
temples of India,
it is set in the midst of lush green environs mainly consisting of fruit
orchards and coniferous forests. A flight of stone steps leads one to the
temple with a Shiva Lingam made of white marble. Besides the main Lingam, idols
of Brahma, Vishnu, Parvati, Ganesh, Nandi and Hanuman also adorn the temple.
Shivaratri is one occasion where the temple sees a large number of devotees
visiting and offering milk and water to the statue. The temple also offers a
beautiful view of the surroundings that one can enjoy in the serene atmosphere
of the place.
