Ranked 15 of 146 sightseeing in Mysore

Shreekanteshwara Temple or Nanjundeswara Temple is a popular pilgrimage destination situated at Nanjangud which is en route to Ooty from Mysore. Nanjangud is located at a distance of about 25 km from Mysore, nearby the banks of River Kapila, a tributary of the River Cauvery. Nanjangud derived this name from the Temple of Nanjundeswara Swamy.

The presence of Shreekanteshwara Temple has given Nanjangud another name, Garalapuri. The presiding deity at Shreekanteshwara Temple is Lord Shreekanteshwara, an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

According to legend, it was Sage Gauthama who installed the linga at this place. Built in the traditional Dravidian style of temple architecture, Shreekanteshwara Temple covers about 1 acre of land and has 121 statues of the various forms of Lord Shiva along with 65 lingams.

Tourists from far and wide visit Shreekanteshwara Temple of Nanjangud during the three day car festival of Sri Nanjundeswara Swamy, which is held at the end of March every year.

Well-maintained and neat

The temple is the main attraction in this place . It is roughly 40 km from Mysuru. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, but it also houses a lot of other Hindi gods. The temple is neat and well maintained. The temple has ample of parking space. The road to the temple from Mysuru is under construction, which can make your ride a bit slower. A must visit place if in Mysuru.

Holy place in Nanjangud

This place is located near Mysore almost 21km from Mysore. A holy place of God Shiva also know as Shreekanteshwara. This place also has stream of river Kaveri wer one can go for boating. But the river is spoiled compare to before because of dirty things dumped. The place is poor is cleanliness. Dust is too much. One can go for photography shoot as the place is has good sculpture and stone architecture around the temple. The best time is during sun rise and sun set. Afternoon time the temple will be closed. The best season is winter. In summer it will be too hot. Rainy season it will too dirty too muddy and will be slippery.

A good place for weekend

About 25 kilometers from mysore you find a place which is not known by its palaces but by its marvelous temple-The Srikantheswara temple. Nanjangud is a place you can visit for a weekend small ride or a small picnic. The kapila river which flows silently beside the temple offers a splendid view. This place is ideal to be visited while you are on a trip to Ooty from Mysore. There are boat rides on offer too in the river. Looking for some weekend fun? Place to visit
