During ancient times, Singapore has been known to be referenced as 'Temasek', Japanese term for 'sea'. It was in the 11th century when the prince from Sri Vijaya Empire, Prince Sang Nila Utama came across this beautiful island and sighted a lion. He named the island 'Singapura' or Lion City. The symbol of Singapore Merlion is a combined representation of its cultural heritage. The fish tail stands for the ancient Temasek, a tiny fishing hamlet in the Malay Peninsula.
Though the island nation of Singapore is one large island surrounded by 63 smaller islets, the city of Singapore covers nearly one-third of the main island. Most of the business centre, financial districts, and prominent offices are located here. Apart from that, a good number of sightseeing destinations and shopping extravaganzas can be visited in the city. A host of festivals and events are held in numerous convention centres within the city limits.
Today, the vibrant city of Singapore is full of fun filled activities for the whole family all through the year. From high-end amusement parks, water sports and innumerable beaches to relax on, Singapore city is also host to the Mega Shopping Bonanza and various other events.
