The Spituk Monastery is one of the earliest monasteries in Leh and in the state of Ladakh. It was established by a very learned and intellectually gifted Buddhist monk and translator named Rinchen Zangpo. The translator gave the monastery the name of Spituk and this monastery is situated on top of a hill overlooking the beautiful Indus River. Numerous tourists visit the monastery to view its vast and breathtaking collection of masks, ethnic attire, some well preserved antique weapons and some rare Buddhist icons. The best time to visit the Spituk monastery is when the annual festival the Spituk Gustor is held.
