Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple contains an idol of Lord Vishnu in the sleeping posture on the snake Ananta. Sri Ranganathaswamy is the presiding deity of this temple. When one lakh lamps are lit during Sankranti, the temple is well known for its Lakhadweepotsava. The Lord is a manifestation of Vishnu and is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams. With 24 forms of Lord Vishnu, pillars of the temple have been carved.
One of the largest temples in the state, the temple consists of a Mahadwara with a huge tower and a pillared hall built in three or four different stages. These halls are Sukanasi and Garbhagrih. Inside the enclosures, there are many other shrines. An image of Vishnu reclining on the huge coils of the snake Ananta is located within the Garbhagrih (Cell).
The temple was built in 9th century by Vijayanagara Rulers, and contains many intricate carvings and sculptures. Blend of Hoysala as well as Vijayanagara styles depict the architecture of the temple. Shrines dedicated to Lord Krishna, Gowtama muni and River Cauvery are located within the temple. Inner walls of the temple contain images of Lord Srinivasa and Panchmukha Anjaneya.
