Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple is situated atop the Elephant or Hastigiri Hill and is dedicated to Varadaraja Perumal or Lord Vishnu. The deity is enshrined within the temple tank and is carved out of atti wood.
Once in every 40 years, the deity is brought out before the public for some 48 days. During the months of May and June, the annual Garudothsavam Festival is celebrated at this site and is attended by several people.
The temple comprises of numerous sculptures and carvings of lizards that are plated in gold and of riders on horsebacks. The most interesting feature of the temple is the twin lizards that are crafted in silver and gold and are known to annul the sins of those who touch them.
It also includes a 16th century pillared pavilion, 100-pillared hall that is carved out of monolith and ornamental rings at the four corners that are carved out of a single stone.
