St. John Church in Dharamshala is also known as St. John Church in Wilderness. It is an Anglican Church which is dedicated to Saint John. This church was constructed in the year 1852, situated at Forsyth Ganj. It is built in Neo-Gothic architectural style and features Belgian stained-glass windows that were donated by Lady Elgin (Mary Louisa Lambton), wife of Lord Elgin.

In 1905 an earthquake destroyed the bell tower of this church. A new bell was built by Stainbank and Mears in 1915, which was brought from England. The Gaggal Airport and Pathankot Railway Station are situated close to this ancient church.

"The Church at the Hilltop"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Apr 14, 2016
A quaint little church sits at the top of a hill. Bewildered by trees and and stone masonry of fine class. It also houses a graveyard of the previous British colony that ruled over here. A must visit for Christians and also there is a church service at Sundays. A place where you can meditate and have a chat with God.

Britishers just got it at the right place. This place has slice of history in it. It's stone masonry is simply superb. The govt can do more to beautify this place and make this place an amazing tourist spot.

"Church is not maintained well"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Aug 15, 2015
Our visit to the church was average visit, the church is not maintained inspite of the historical importance attached with it. Though it is located in good location it could have maintained well for memorable visit.

"Church of St. John and Saint John's Church are the same place."

  • 4.5/7
  • Posted Jul 7, 2015
The church is very old and has been rebuilt. It's quite cold in April there so I recommend taking warm clothes. It's just on the way to McLeod Ganj. It's quite spooky.

"Just a church with beautiful surroundings"

  • 4.5/7
  • Posted Jul 6, 2015
The church is on the way to McLeod Ganj. It is situated amidst lush trees and grass. There is a cemetery nearby which makes it kinda spooky. The Church has dark and cold interiors. We visited on Good Friday this year and it was very cold inside. I would recommend warm clothes.

Peaceful place. The church is very old, but well maintained. Although the church is not that good, but the garden outside is a good place to enjoy nature.

"Gothic yet amazing"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Aug 22, 2014
Remember the horror movies where on a hill station, there is a church and cemetery around. That's the place! If you are visiting Dharamshala for the first time, you will visit this place most likely as it is on the way to McLeod Ganj.
a) For relaxation: the beautiful garden is there.
b) For your love of photos: Surrounded with trees and forest, it provides perfect setting for some gorgeous pictures. Unfortunately, we reached after 5 PM and it was closed. So, if you want to see inside of the church better visit early. We visited in June 2014.
