Went to Kerala with my husband in January 2015 and we stayed 2 nights at Taamara. With the most wonderful hosts - Ms. Nirmala and her assistants Govind and his wife - we had the loveliest of times in this heaven of tranquility. And to top it off, food-wise it was probably among the best 3-4 days of food in my life! So if you're heading to the backwaters, stay at Taamara and enjoy a room that is literally on Lake Vembanad!
From an absolute plethora of options in Aleppey / Kumarakom / nearby, we picked Taamara, situated bang on the bank of the Vembanad (opposite side from Kumarakom, in quaint and quiet Kannankara), and dare I say we could not have picked better! Mrs. Nirmala is the most gracious and warm host, and has done her place up so tastefully that one is torn between whether to simply stay in or to venture out and explore the backwaters. Set in a fairly large plot of land, the place has 4 rooms, all on the edge of the water, with at least 2 (on the ground floor) having decks that feel like they are bobbing up and down with the omnipresent hydrophilae. Add to that lovely, spacious rooms and sitting areas, beautifully manicured gardens, dinner conversations about Mr. Babu's films, and - hold your breath for this one! - the most gobsmackingly delicious food that money can buy in this area, and you have what we felt was the perfect homestay experience. A touch steep at Rs.7000 a night, but it was peak season (18-20 December), and with canoeing, night fishing and cycling thrown in, I'd say money's worth. So if it fits your budget, I'd say close your eyes and stay here!
