The Gateway Hotel in Coonoor (that's the new name of Taj Garden Retreat) has more happiness per square foot than anywhere else in the blue mountain range. And it starts the moment you step inside this venture of the Taj Group of Hotels. Orange garlands find their place around your neck and your parched throat is given sufficient nourishment with an energising fruit juice. Enter the colonial Superior Room overlooking the misty Blue Mountains and a garden that plays host to bonfires at night, and you know you will be pampered from sole to soul. Picture this. High ceilings, fireplace, sparkling white interiors, glass shower cubicle, luxurious bathtub in a spacious bathroom, and an in-house TV channel that teaches you yoga. No two rooms are alike, giving you the exclusivity you deserve. But the best part? You are staying in a 150-year-old Victorian building where the priests of the next-door All Saints Church once stayed.
While we have passion to travel and are outdoors almost on monthly basis, Ooty/Coonoor was a surprising late entry to our 'been-there' list. First- the plus-es: On check-in was welcomed by garland and a spice-honey drink. The 32 sq.m. room was pretty big & decent too. We remembered our Taj stay at Kumarakom (Kerala). My friends had got their rooms facing the front lawn and Bonfire area- no complaints about that. Sonny enjoyed a lot after long time- carefully exploiting each and every play equipment there- Cricket, Cycling, Fussball & Carrom. He also loved the IPL (for the layman- Indian Premier League- a quicky version of Cricket involving India & international players) on the large screen. Property was very well maintained and even though it was oriental cottage style, all of us liked it. The sunset view from Activity room was awesome. Not much to do in Coonoor- we did not like the crowded places and so spent most of the time at the hotel- it was worth it. Unfortunately, we had gotten sick that spoiled our stay. The other disappointing thing was the food - which was not up to the mark of this great hotel chain. I have mentioned the issues to the Manager and he has promised to take corrective actions. Finally, if I go back to Coonoor, before staying in the Hotel, I will check whether the same Manager is there- so that I can get careful attention. The package that was offered was very attractive- provided they improve upon the food, or probably the kitchen!
This hotel is situated 1-2km from Coonoor railway station at Ooty is approx 16-18km from this hotel. I stayed for 3 days with my family, I must say that, this place in Nilgiris hills is so peaceful that you will feel like reaching heaven on earth with maximum greenery all around. When I entered hotel, at the reception we were welcome with flowers and some hot ginger honey drink which gave smoothness to our throats as it was very cold at that time. Hotel is built along with church as it was used to be oldest house for nuns and fathers of church then later I got converted into hotel by gateway groups which are associated with Taj hotels and resorts group. When the name of Taj joins with any hotel then it automatically become best hotel as you get lots of facilities from small to big. This hotel is near to Ooty, Lovedale and Coonoor so you can almost cover everything in whole day if you get out of room early morning. There is one tea estate also which allows you to see whole process of tea making, after that you can buy same samples of team from their factory outlet. Gateway hotel of Coonoor is well built with lots of facilities like badminton court, tennis court, gym, playground with rides for children, no one can get bore easily at this hotel. Every evening hotel staff organise bonfire and games for families and children, there is one reception hall also for marriages and parties. There is also provision of cycling for small to big age of children. Price of hotel is also much affordable. Food here is very good, specially chicken curry, every food from breakfast to dinner was looking like home made food so there was no single chance of getting ill from their hygienic food. There is one sports or play room for kids which has chess, carom and football so no one can get bore all day. I loved this hotel very much because after so many days of noisy city, my ears got some peaceful relaxation in Nilgiri hills. I would recommend this hotel to everyone who really want to enjoy peaceful relaxed vacations.
The food quality was good. The variety in food was available in the hotel. The room and washroom was neat and clean. The pickup and drop facility was provided by the hotel. The behaviour of the staff was friendly. I had visited this hotel for personal trip. I don't have any suggestion for this hotel. I would recommend this hotel for upcoming travellers.
This is an excellent hotel. We can't praise it enough. Four of us stayed for three nights and had an amazing time. The Gateway is full of old world charm, nestled in beautiful gardens and with a first rate restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed every meal we had, in fact we think it is one of the best hotels we have eaten in in India. The staff couldn't have been more friendly, helpful or professional. We were welcomed with garlands, a refreshing drink and expert advice on what to do in the area. Our rooms were huge, with an office area, bedroom, changing area and deluxe bathroom. Everything was immaculately clean. It was quite cool while we were there and we loved the log fire in our bedroom, plus hot water bottles in our beds! There was a gym and spa attached, which we took advantage of, also a snooker table and games room for children. A wonderful experience, which we would thoroughly recommend.
