The Taj Museum is a double storeyed building, which lies within the Taj Mahal complex. Established in 1982, the museum comprises three galleries and a main hall. There is a gallery, where displays relating to the construction of the Taj Mahal and to the period of its construction are exhibited.
This museum houses 121 antiquities, which are categorised as Mughal miniature paintings, manuscripts, government decrees and specimen of calligraphy. The collection also comprises arms, utensils, plans and drawings of the Taj Complex, paintings, specimen inlay work and marble pillars.
In the main hall, tourists can see paintings of Shah Jahan and his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal. Both the paintings are made on ivory and are encased in ornamental wooden frame. Exhibits at the museum also include paintings from the famous Persian epic Shahnama of Firdausi, which is a manuscript of Chaihl Majlis.
The first gallery of the museum holds exhibits of plans and drawings of the architecture of Taj Mahal. Tourists can also see the copies of Shah Jahan’s Farmans addressed to Raja Jai Singh.
There is another Farman on display, which dates back to 20th June, 1637. Another gallery of the museum displays jade and porcelain objects like Quran stand carved of jade, spouted vase carve of Jade and mirror mounted on stone.
The third gallery of the museum exhibits the important royal Farmans and Waslis of famous calligraphy of the period. Paintings of Taj Mahal that are made by British artist Daniel in the year 1795 are also displayed.
