Talakaveri, located in the Brahmagiri hill, is considered to be the source of Cauvery River. The origin is marked by a tank or kundike, which is placed at a height of 1276 metres above sea level. This tank is a holy place to bathe on the Tula Sankramana day, which is the first day of Tula Masa month, as per the Hindu calendar. Pilgrims throng this holy place to witness the rise of the fountainhead at a predetermined moment.
This area also has a temple dedicated to Goddess Caveriamma, which is frequented by pilgrims. Idols of Lord Agastheeswara and Maha Ganapathi are also worshipped in this temple. According to Hindu mythology, Sage Agasthya held Cauvery River in his Kamandala. Lord Ganesha perched on the Kamandala in the form of a crow, while Sage Agasthya was meditating. Sage Agasthya shooed the crow away; however, it tipped the Kamandala and toppled it and river Cauvery started flowing.
