Tadoba by Ronak from Mumbai

Tadoba, in Maharashtra, is India’s best kept secret. Tadoba has a variety of wildlife. In a total of six jeep safaris, our sightings included Tigers (two times up close and another 2 – 3 times from a distance, sloth bears, wild dogs, bison herds, nilgai, monkeys, all types of deer, the elusive jungle cat and among birds, peacocks, Indian pitta, owl, kingfisher, serpent eagle and many more. We missed the leopard but there are regular sightings of the same in Tadoba. I would say Tadoba is a must-visit place for any wildlife and nature lover. The only activity in Tadoba is going on a jungle safari and park safari timings are between 6.00 AM to 11.00 AM and in the afternoon 3.00 PM to 7.00 PM. Timings may differ during the winter season. One should go on as many safaris possible to boost one’s chances of sighting animals and birds. My advice is to opt for an open gypsy safari; you will love the experience and, additionally, you will have the advantage of two guides - one forest department guide and the other will be your driver who is as good as a guide

Please note the park remains closed on Tuesdays. As there are very few open gypsies for safaris, please book the same in advance, if you are visiting the park during holidays, or on weekends. Also, book your accommodation in advance as there are only three options to choose from - the MTDC is your best bet for accommodation. While in the jungle, wear comfortable clothes that camouflage you in the surroundings. Talk softly, don’t litter and listen to your guide.

Bandhavgarh National Park by Anupam from Raipur

Bandhavgarh, in Madhya Pradesh, is famous for its tigers. They are the main reason why Bandhavgarh has earned a spot for itself in the tourist map. Today it has become an important source of livelihood for the people living there. This year we decided to go to a National Park. Bandhavgarh, because of its smaller area and abundance of deer and sambhar is the ideal place to see tigers in their natural habitat. The forest is deciduous and grasslands sparse which make tiger sighting easy. Do not go there for the tigers alone - the rest of the flora and fauna is equally interesting. Your whole trip will revolve around the safari. Make sure you go for at least two safaris. Tigers are in profusion and chances of sighting them are high even in your first safari. Choose the summer months. In fact, the guide told us that in May one could find tigers simply lying in the grasslands. But I think March is the best trade off as it is not too hot, and just hot enough for the tigers to frequent watering holes. Once you have had your fill of tiger sightings, have a look at the other fauna, including spotted deer, wild boar, sambhar, peacocks, the Indian roller, and so on. Don’t miss a visit to the Bandhavgarh fort which is located inside the jungle. The trip to the fort is another pleasant experience, especially the steep uphill ride. There are several tree houses - if they are not occupied, you are lucky.

Ranthambore by Anuraag from Jodhpur

Ranthambore, situated at Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan, is synonymous with tigers! Many tourists flock here all year round just to get a glimpse of tigers in their natural habitat. It is officially said there are around 30 tigers in the sanctuary making the possibility of sighting one many times more. The forest is just 10 minutes drive from the railway station and whole town has many good to very good resorts in almost every range and budget. It is a busy town, almost tourist oriented, can be crowded in peak seasons. You can always come across wild animals like variety of deer, peacocks, foxes, jackals, and rabbits, among others. Take clothes as per the weather as it is hot in summer and can be very cold in winters. There are no real unexpected weather changes in this belt. One can reach Ranthambore by rail (Sawai Madhopur) or by road; the nearest airport is Jaipur. For a safari, try to be an early bird so that a better zone is allotted. Binoculars can be handy, carry water bottles along, and please do not throw anything or feed any animal in the jungle. One can carry eatables along but should keep the waste in a bag and dispose of it after coming out of the jungle.

Dandeli by Sushma from Bangalore

Dandeli is a nature lover’s paradise and adventure enthusiasts will love it! Dandeli in Northern Karnataka is one of the most activity oriented wildlife sanctuary in South India. The audacious activities include trekking, rafting, rappelling and cave explorations. Almost all resorts arrange for rafting and rappelling. It costs Rs.1200 per head for rafting and Rs.250 per head for rappelling. You have to book rooms well in advance; there will be difficulty in getting rooms here during peak season. You can also visit ancient caves close by, around 50km from Dandeli and 4 km from Ulvi. Don’t forget to take a torch if you are planning to visit the caves. It is pitch dark inside and you cannot see anything without a torch. There is also one natural spring here. The spring water is crystal-clear and tastes very good. The drive from Dandeli to Gund (a near-by village) is very beautiful. The route is filled with curvy roads and the views on both sides of the road are excellent. From Bangalore you can take a train till Alnavar (it is the closest railway station to Dandeli -30km). For local travel, you can hire a jeep that could cost you Rs.1500 per day. The best time to visit is in January and February.
