Taragarh Fort is located atop the Nagpahari Hill in Ajmer. Often considered as the first hill fort of Asia, it is also known as the 'Fort of Ajmer'.   It was constructed at a time when the Aravalli mountain ranges were above the snowlines.

Built by King Ajaypal Chauhan on the pinnacle of Taragarh Hill, overlooking Ajmer, it has the reputation of being one of the oldest hill forts of the world.    It is often called as the 'Star Fort', dating back from the 12th century.

Situated 3 km and a steep 1.5 hours climb beyond the Adhai-din ka Jhonpra Mosque, the fort offers an aerial view of the entire city. Built in the year 1100 A.D by Ajaypal Chauhan, the town's founder, the fort was the site of military activities during Mughal times.

Lakshmi Pol, Phuta Darwaza and Gagudi ki Phatak are the three gateways of the fort. Bhim Burj that acts as a crenellation and support for the canons is amongst the highlights of the fort. The fort also contains many reservoirs,   carved out of the solid rock.

"An amazing and very religious place with an amazing history"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 3 months ago
Taragarh Pahar is an amazing place with religious importance. On the top of this hill you can find many things like hotels, restaurants etc. You can see sightseeing there and go to religious places also. There is a place on top where you can always hear a sound of a Horse when you take your ear near a wall and reason behind this is an amazing history.

If you want to know how was my experience on Taragarh I just want to say I want to go there 100 times more.

The sight is walled and hence fort. Reach it from shuttle cab services from most parts of Ajmer. Costs less than seventy rupees. But hardly the remains have been preserved.

"The First Fort On Steep Hill"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Nov 18, 2015
The first fort built on a Steep hill in India was the fortress of Taragarh or Star Forte at Ajmer. Its unique defence and strength lie in the impenetrable toughness and acclivity of the mountain upon which it is built. This ancient fort has seen many historic battles and nerve-wrecking sieges and has changed hands with the Rajput, Muslim, Maratha and the British conquerors during its long and checkered history.

Ajaymeru Doorg, as it was originally called, was built by Raja Ajai Raj Chauhan who was the king of Sapad Laksh territory having Shakambhari. Due to improper maintenance, many battles this renowned forte is just ruined. Though it was famous for its tunnels, Bhim Burj on which the large cannon Garbh Gunjam was mounted.

On the highest point of Taragarh fort stands the Dargah of Hazrat Miran Syed Hussain Asghar Khangsar who was the governor of Ajmer after its conquest by Sultan Shahabuddin Ghori. On the death of Qutubuddin Aibak in 1210 A. D. , the Rathor and Chauhan Rajputs joined in a night attack on the Taragarh, and massacred Miran Saheb and his garrison.

From the top of the hill you find a beautiful and heart touching view of whole city Ajmer. And now maximum tourists are coming to the holy Shrine Of Miran Saheb, at Star Fort.

This place is nearby to Dargah and we have to climb the mountain. We have two choice either by walking or using vehicle to climb it. Overall experience is good.

This fort situated at the highest point in Ajmer is a beautiful place to enjoy the sightseeing of the whole city. The best time to visit the fort is during the time of sunset. You can enjoy a view of the whole city from this point. The landscape in the background will give you some wonderful pictures to remember.

"The place of martyrs"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Feb 1, 2015
Taragarh which is located in Ajmer, Rajasthan is situated at 7 km above the hill from the foothill. The journey from the foothill to the above is very beautiful as the road is very curvy and scenery is so beautiful. From Taragarh, the whole Ajmer city is seen from above which is so beautiful that it makes our mind fresh. It is a place where the graves of martyrs are there.

"Not much to see"

  • 3.5/7

It is all in ruins now. We went there after reading in travel guides, but there is nothing to see or explore. Most of the area is encroached by locals. Maharana Pratap memorial on the way is worth a stop.
