Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, also known as Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is a must-visit among the tourists visiting the hill station of Munnar.
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary lies nearby Kothamangalm of Ernakulam, which is about 80 km from the town of Munnar. Thattekad, situated on the northern banks of River Periyar, was declared as a Bird Sanctuary only in 1983, based on the recommendation received from Dr. Salim Ali in the 1930’s. According to the view of Dr. Salim Ali, Thattekad had the richest bird habitat in Peninsular India.
Though Thattekad Bird Sanctuary has only 25 sq km area, it houses more than 270 avian species. Tourists can have a glimpse of rare birds like Mottled Wood Owl, Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, Malayan Night Heron, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Grey-headed Bulbul and the Nilgiri Wood Pigeon at Thattekad Bird Sanctuary. October to April is the best time to visit Thattekad Bird Sanctuary.
