The Jain Caves at Ellora traces their history to 9th and 10th century. There are five Jain temples in Ellora and all of them belong to the Digambara sect. The most popular Jain shrine is the Chhota Kailash, which is Cave 30. The two-storied Indra Sabha (Cave 32) and the Jagannath Sabha (Cave 33) are other notable Jain Caves.

Cave 32 houses monolithic shrine in its court, which has beautiful carving of lotus flower on the ceiling. Images of Ambika, the Yakshi of Neminath, seated on her lion under a mango tree is carved on the upper level of this shrine.

"Exquisite Cave Architecture" new review

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
The Jain Caves constituting from cave numbers 30 to 34 are really fascinating although they are in the far end and on the extreme left and it is definitely better to take an additional bus ride to visit rather than walking all the way. There is no separate entry fee for this, covered in the overall entry ticket. A visit makes one realize the details of Jain religious architecture. I had visited Ellora before in a conducted tour but what they covered was only the Kailash Temple and do not take to these Jain temples, so its better if one is really interested in art and history.
