Thekkady/Periyar food, sight-seeing and shopping options
Thekkady’s single biggest attraction is its huge lake. With 2-tier motorised boats one can go boating which takes about 2 hours per trip. On a lucky day, I’m told that many wild animals can be spotted along the lake’s shores. All that we spotted were a group of bisons (very far away), a couple of wild pigs and a herd of sambhar. We didn’t even see an elephant, for which Thekkady is so well known !! We were informed that during the rainy season, animals do not venture out since there will be enough water for them to drink inside.

Hotel Review of Periyar House
Comments: Its a nice experience in the jungle. My family had a great time with the nature and the wildlife.
Best Experience: We had a close encounter with the tusker and we got zapped when it started marching towards us and then we started getting in to our boat
Worst Experience: Service was not up to the mark

Hotel Review of Periyar House
We thoroughly enjoyed our unique stay inside the wildlife sanctuary at the reasonably priced Periyar House. It is ridiculous to pay the inflated rates of the other 2 hotels, the Aranya and Lake Palace, considering one is out of the room most of the day. Even though it is a govt property, the staff were as courteous, friendly and helpful as in any private hotel. The housekeeping boy came running to find me just to show me a...

Hotel Review of Periyar House
The best located modestly priced hotel within the sanctuary. Rooms were clean and big, ours was a superior room with attached sit out overlooking tall trees filled with exotic jungle birds in the mornings and evenings. Staff are friendly and courteous, always smiling. Very convenient for enjoying the Periyar Sanctuary, especially the nature trekking activities and morning boat ride. There are many trails nearby to be explored and sambar, wild boar, giant squirrel and nilgiri langurs...

Hotel Review of Periyar House
Being a wildlife enthusiast, I went to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary with a lot of excitement and expectations. But I guess we chose the wrong time of the year (August) to visit that place. It was raining continuously. Throughout. and non-stop !! Obviously we hardly saw just one or two animals ! Very disappointing really ! Even the boating was a big flop, since no animal stepped out of the forest to the shores of the huge lake !!...

Hotel Review of Periyar House
The refurbished resort is somewhat nice, keeping in mind it is a government owned property. The staff, though okay, could be much better, especially in understanding what you say and in speaking English. There is no mosquito mesh in windows even though the first thing you are warned about is the swarm of bugs and bees that can come into your room. Nothing is being done about the monkey menace- leave your room door open for a minute and they...

Hotel Review of Periyar House
A resort fit for a perfect relaxed holiday, located such that you feel at home with nature, and when you’re one with nature nothing untoward can ever happen. Situated right in the middle of the forest, giving all a chance to get close up and personal with monkeys, birds and the rest. All in all, a lovely experience....
