The Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the famous wildlife reserves in the district of Wayanad. It is famous for its night camping and a watchtower, which is located above the lake. This lake is also the main source of water for the wild animals inhabiting the sanctuary. The sanctuary is part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and is situated about 15 km north of Mananthavady.

It is well-connected with Nagarhole in the state of Karnataka by road. This sanctuary is home to numerous animal species like jungle cat, bison, tiger, etc. There are more than 900 elephants in this wildlife sanctuary, which is considered to be the same place where Pazhassi Raja fought the British. The ideal time for visiting this sanctuary is between September and May.

"Absolute waste"

  • 1.5/7
  • Posted Feb 15, 2016
I wonder if this is a wildlife sanctuary or a forest meant for plain jeep rides, when they charged just 300 Rs per person for a jeep safari ride, I was a little sceptic. But still went ahead and took a ride, the driver boasted of seeing Elephants, Bisons and Tigers, it was all crap, we couldn't see anything all, we just felt that the driver took us for a jeep ride and charged the money for the same.

"We won't be disappointed and will see wild animals"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Sep 10, 2015
Traveling about 15 Kms from Mananthavady, we reached the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary area and we drove slowly to avoid missing any wild animals by the side of the road. We could see Bison, Deer, one rare type of Monkey, few Peacocks, Wild Goose and some rare birds. We were warned by a team returning back that a Leopard was on the road but we couldn't see it. The drive through the thick forest, the sight of wild animals close by and the overall experience was worth remembering for lifetime.

Lovely jungle ride, the experience of driving through the serene surroundings is beautiful. You might even be lucky to sight elephants walking along the roads along with their little ones! Best time to visit would be the post monsoon season

"Wonderful forest ride"

Saw lots and lots of deers. Also saw Peacocks, and a Elephant. If you love nature, the trip is worth. But you don't get to see too many wild animals, so don't go with high expectations. But if you trees etc. then the trip is worth it.

In Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary you can go for a wildlife safari in private Jeeps. If you visiting in summer, the place is too dusty.

Went for trekking at 7.00 am, hired a jeep for 400 bucks. The entrance fee is another 60 bucks. But we were unlucky, no good sightings... the whole trekking lasted for very little time.

Best time to visit the Sanctuary is during summer period and during sunset as that's the time we would be able to see most of the animals.

"Great place, but bad roads"

  • 4.5/7

Great! We spotted many elephants. But the trip was terrible! The roads are so bad! Why could not the forest authorities have an even-surface road? Even if it is mud road.
