The Thousand Lights Mosque of Chennai is a popular pilgrimage destination of the Shia community of India. Located on Anna Salai Road in Chennai, Thousand Lights Mosque is famous for its architectural splendour.
It is said that 1000 oil lamps were lit up to illuminate the hall of the Mosque, which gave it the name ‘Thousand Lights Mosque’.
The mosque, built in the year 1820, exhibits a medieval architectural style. The mosque has multi-domes and two towering minarets. The minarets are at a height of about 64 feet above the ground.
The main hall in the ground floor is meant for offering prayers by men. There is a separate prayer hall for women. There are two rooms on the second floor of the mosque, called Dargah, which is held as a sanctuary of Imam Hossein and Abolfazl-al-Abbas.
The Thousand Lights Mosque can be easily reached as it is located at the crossing of Mount Road and Peters Road within the precincts of the city of Chennai. Though the mosque was refurbished numerous times since its foundation, it still holds a prominent place among the tourist attractions of Chennai.
