Kozhikode (Calicut) Sightseeing - Thusharagiri Falls

Some 50kms east of Kozhikode in Kerala is the picturesque holiday destination of Thusharagiri, a small tribal village. Two streams originating from the verdant Western Ghats converge here to form the River Challipuzha. The gushing river diverges into three waterfalls, throwing up a fine snowy spray of water giving it a snowy effect. Thus the name ' ‘Thusharagiri', which means 'snowy peak'.

Of the three waterfalls, the highest waterfall is situated at the plantation destination of Kodencherry. Called the Thenpara, the fall cascades down from an altitude of 75 m and is a lovely sight to behold.  This evergreen spot abounds in rubber, areca nut, pepper, ginger and spices. The region is a veritable paradise for trekkers. Put on your hiking shoes and explore the terrain here.

The monsoons bring plenty of rain and the roar of the waterfalls is truly a treat to the ears, best enjoyed between September to November. 

Trekkers Alert. Get an early morning start from the second waterfalls in the hills. The air is invigorating. Pick your way through the dense evergreen forests full of exotic birds and fauna and time your arrival to be at Vythiri by evening.

A visit to a dam located around 45 km from Calicut is also recommended. A tour of the crocodile farm run by the state forest department is sure to give you some good photographic memories.
