Top Station was an important trade centre in the early days. Top Station is situated about 1700 m above sea level at about 41 km from Munnar town, on Munnar – Kodaikanal road.
Top Station is a favourite spot for many, as it provides a panoramic view of Munnar and surrounding areas. As Munnar has a varying altitude of 1500 - 2450 m above sea level, it appears mostly as a green carpet from Top Station. The Shola forests, rolling grasslands, valleys, water bodies and tea, coffee and spice plantations when viewed from this location provides a breath-taking experience.
Top Station is the highest point in Munnar which is easily accessible to tourists. It is also the natural habitat of the rare Nilakurinji plants (strobilanthus). Nilakurinji plants, which bloom only once in twelve years, envelope the hill sides of Top Station in bright blue. The next bloom of Nilakurinji plants is supposed to take place in the year of 2018.
Top Station, situated atop Munnar, borders Idukki District of Kerala and Theni District of Tamil Nadu. It is a place mostly shrouded with mist. But when the sky is clear, Madurai District of Tamil Nadu can be viewed from this spot.
