The
Tunga Anicut Dam, located about 12 km from Shimoga, is good for short hikes and
picnics. The journey to the dam is through lush green paddy fields and arecanut
plantations.
The dam is on the rocky TungabhadraRiver
within the Shettihalli Sanctuary and is open every day from 10 AM to 5 PM. The
view surrounding the dam is fantastic with swirling waters, a small forested
island amidst the water, dense teak jungles on the shores and the Bababudain
Giri range in the faraway background.
Boats are available on rent for trips around the
lake which has plenty of otters and water birds. There is a small Tiger reserve
also here known as Thyvare Koppa Lion & Tiger Reserve, which has a
playground and some caged birds. The sanctuary is only twenty minutes by bus
from Shimoga.
