Tungabhadra Dam, set up across river Tungabhadra, is one of the chief attractions of the town of Hospet. The multi-purpose reservoir was built by Dr. Thirumalai Iyengar, an engineer from Chennai. The dam has a storage capacity of 135 thousand million cubic feet.

The dam gets filled with water during rains and water is supplied to the canals. It fulfils requirements of electricity, irrigation of land as well as prevents natural disasters like floods. Over the years, the site of the reservoir has become a popular picnic or tourist spot.

Besides, the water body has various species of fish and other aquatic animals. Species such as greater flamingos, spot-billed pelicans, storks and others   can also be spotted at the site. Tourists visit in large numbers to the artificial water body to spot movements of birds and fishing.

"A good place to visit in the evening"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Oct 5, 2016
I got a chance to visit this place during my recent visit to Hampi.

Reaching this place is very easy.

Ample parking place for the cars/vehicles.

Entry is free for this place.

There is bus facility available which covers 3 places.

1. Top Point (Government Guest house) - The view of the Dam from this place is too good.

2. Dam.

3. Probating.

The distance from gate to Dam is about 1 km and distance to top point is around 3 km.

The cost is 20/- per person.

Boating can also be done, which is very close to entry gate.

Pedal boats are the only type of boats available.

Cost is Rs. 50/- per person and there is no time limit on using the boats.

Worth a visit.

You can reach the top of the Dam by walk or by bus from the Dam entrance. The Garden is well-maintained. The viewpoint is awesome. This place is too good if we visit during winter/Spring season.

Tungabhadra Dam or T. B. Dam was constructed by Er. Tirumala Iyengar and Certified by Sir. M. Vishveshwarayya. Nice view of dam and calm place to relax. 33 Crest Gates are bliss to admire when all gates are open during July-Aug.

"Not much to do there"

  • 3.0/7
  • Posted Aug 15, 2015
The view of the dam and the Tungabhadra river is splendid, especially during sunrise or sunset. Gardens are okay and they have a deer park but that closes by late evening. Also, there was a musical fountain but the songs were mostly in local language and hence, I didn't enjoy much. Aquarium was a disappointment. Apart from this, there isn't a lot to do here.

"This was a biggest dam I saw"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted May 17, 2015
The dam was very huge I still have photos we clicked with my friends in there, we have visited its mechanical center, we saw its turbines and etc. As we visited as educational tour the staff have accepted our visit and explained each and everything in there. We saw it as closest as possible was a very amazing moment for us.

On the way back from Hampi, this is the best pit stop you can have. You wont believe its in India. Its the most beautiful dam I ever seen, crystal clear water, perfect for swimming, black stones its the perfect combination to enjoy a sunset.

"A 'temple' of progress"

  • 5.5/7
  • Posted Dec 23, 2014
This is a huge dam & is worth a visit if you have a couple of hours. You need to take a minibus ride that first takes you on a steep uphill climb of 3.5 kms to the highest point from where you get a birds eye view. You can then hop on the bus to go down to the second (lower) level where you can look over the parapet of the dam. Another short ride down takes you to the gardens & small aquarium. The best time to visit is in the afternoon, around 4.30 pm.
