Vainu Bappu Observatory offers tourists an insight into the movement of celestial bodies. Located in Kavalar, near Yelagiri, the observatory can be entered only by prior permission. Managed by Indian Institute of Astrophysics Bangalore, the observatory houses Asia's largest telescope. Built by Dr. Vaini Bapu after whom the observatory is named, the telescope is 93 inches in diameter.
Apart from seeing the functioning of the Vainu Bappu Telescope at the observatory, tourists can also enjoy views from a visitor telescope, through which night skies are shown. In front of the observatory, deer roam freely.
