Considered one of the holiest temples in India, the temple of Vaishno Devi resides at an altitude of over 5000 feet above the sea level. Vaishno Devi, also known as Vaishnavi and Mata Rani, is at a distance of 12 km from Katra.  Every year, nearly a million devotees visit the temple to offer their prayers to the deity. A board, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, has been setup by the Government to look after the welfare of the temple.

From Katra, apart from walking, few other modes of transportation are available. The J&K Government offers helicopter services from both Jammu and Katra to the temple. Little ponies and Palkis are also available for the journey. However, most of the devotees prefer the journey on foot to reach the temple. It takes nearly 4 hours to reach the temple, and 3 hours to come back downhill.

"Enjoyed the journey to reach mata temple" new review

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted 1 week ago
This was the destination we reached at the hotel about 8 at night. The hotel staff instructed us to start walking/trekking to reach the mata temple so we started at 11 pm at night.

We need to take a taxi and it took Rs. 100 for 4 people to reach at the starting gate of the temple. Although in October/November intake there were crowd, we started walking, there were even 5 year old kid who were in the group. It took us about 3 hours to reach at the top, we had couple of breaks in between where we can have small breakfast and tea/coffee in between. There is also option to reach the mata temple by tattu/horse and palkhi but it was RS. 1500 one side so costly, it's not too steep so we decided to go on our feet.

Once we were at the top, there are many devotees, and there were queue but in the matter of 20 odd minutes we entered into the main temple but hardly let us worship for 5 odd minutes and crowd was there. We didn't want to walk more as about 200 feet more up there was another temple.

But this was my first time experience in chilly cold, this was much different then AMBAJI or PAVAGADH in Gujarat. We felt journey is more important and not the destination, must carry water, some sponge to put in shoes, and snacks.

"Awesome religious place to visit" new review

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
My experience of Vaishno Devi Temple was awesome. As I am a traveler and I love to visit new places. I went to this temple in the month of July, the climate was pleasant. The locals who live there are very friendly I must say and the trek to bhawan is good. There were so many people some were walking and some had hired ponies to reach bhawan. I reached the bhawan at night so slept there. The journey was good and I really had fun.

"Securities are rude"

Inspite of tight security for entrance, the devotees should allow to look on the PINDI MATA, security people behaved rudely to "aage bado haatho se dhakka maar ke" it does not seem social, religious and legal.

"No sweets, coconut allowed and no helicopter booking available on the same day"

  • 7.00/7
  • Posted 2 months ago
Vaishno Devi yatra only happens for the fortunate ones, I had been there this June, we were in a group. We started at 12. 30am and reached by 11 am next morning with lots of rest in between as we climbed up. After Ardhkuwari there's a new road which is a must to avoid the messy crowd of horses and it's almost level. Prasad is available up there at 10, 25 and 40rs. No sweets or coconuts are allowed inside. Lockers are safe but overcrowded. Helicopters are not available for booking on same day.

"Beautiful, scenic & holy temple"

Nice experience, very peaceful & holy place. Preferably start walking during night. Temple is open for darshan overnight. One can also go by riding a horse. You have to carry warm clothes in all seasons. Many canteens are available along the road so no need to carry any eatables.

"Chopper ride to the temple is the best ride and needs to be booked before"

  • 5.50/7
  • Posted 2 months ago
Katra Vaishno Devi is one of the most visited temples in North India. It is located in the Shivalik hills. As usual like most of the pilgrim places in India it is very crowded. Hordes of pilgrims come to this temple on horse, Palki, walk, chopper.

Of all the options the chopper ride is best it costs about 1100/- rupees one way and another 1100 return trip. Once reached you need to walk downhill for about 3 kms, the chopper ride also entitles you to special Darshan queue. We went in April and we had booked about 1. 5 months early for the chopper tickets, else it is tough to get these tickets.

The darshan was smooth almost took about 20mins flat. They give you a coin and Prasad there. Returning back to chopper pick up point takes good 1. 5 hours as it is uphill trek. There is hotel called some Dakshin serving masala dosa, naan, few other dishes but is cleaner compared to others enroute.

For people desirous of returning by walk start in evening and trek in night. Depending on your pace of walk it may take close to 4-5 hours. There are many places where you get some juices and biscuits on the way. Once you reach closer to Dhaka Vary you will start seeing many shops for bangles, chains, key chains etc. Once you reach down you will find many locals ready to give you a leg massage, go for one of them you feel better.

"No leather and electronic items allowed in the temple"

  • 6.00/7
  • Posted 3 months ago
At Bhawan, for darshan keep all your belongings, shoes, leather items, belt, wallet, pen, even mobile phone in locker which is free of cost at different places. None of these items are allowed there in queue and security will not allow you if you have any. There is checking at several place so be sure you do not have any of objectionable in your pocket. Stayed in Hotel Sahil, in Katra. Best to visit in Feb-April or Sept-December. Full day trek to Bhawan of Ma, well managed by shrine board. Food, toilet and other facility are available at regular distances. Good food at canteens managed by board. Caution! No narcotic, Alcohol, Tobacco allowed and no Camera, Video also.

It was our fortune to visit Vaishno Devi temple and we had nice darshan. We were thought of visit Maa Vaishno Devi temple since some years and at last we got the opportunity to have Maa darshan and blessings. The location and the route is little long and steep, still worth to visit the place atleast once in a lifetime.
