Considered one of the holiest temples in India, the temple of Vaishno Devi resides at an altitude of over 5000 feet above the sea level. Vaishno Devi, also known as Vaishnavi and Mata Rani, is at a distance of 12 km from Katra.  Every year, nearly a million devotees visit the temple to offer their prayers to the deity. A board, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, has been setup by the Government to look after the welfare of the temple.

From Katra, apart from walking, few other modes of transportation are available. The J&K Government offers helicopter services from both Jammu and Katra to the temple. Little ponies and Palkis are also available for the journey. However, most of the devotees prefer the journey on foot to reach the temple. It takes nearly 4 hours to reach the temple, and 3 hours to come back downhill.

Experience of the Vaishno Devi Temple is divine and cannot be explained in words, you have to visit the place to experience it. The temple is a 13 km journey uphill and 13 km downhill on foot or on horse so take little luggage.

"Awesome experience at Katra" new review

  • 4.50/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
Yes the visit was complete paisa-vasool. We went with complete family for the first time and we all enjoyed a lot there. Advice is that do all the pre-bookings right from the home else you will be in trouble. Because we have not booked the tickets for coming back to Delhi. That is why we have to suffer a lot in the bus for that. You should carry a stick along with you for ease of move to the Bhawan

The 14 km yatra can easily be covered as there are all the basic things available on the way that one can need while travelling. Good food with a variety of options available throughout the journey. Difficult to figure out the time of the day or night as the place is always very happening.
