I planned this trip with my college friends last month. This place was recommended to me by of my college friends. This is a decent and a safe place. The plus point of this place was the homemade Maharashtrian food which we really enjoyed! The host was very hospitable. Myra point is at a walkable distance from the guest house. Also, our room had a valley view which was very beautiful. I recommend this place! I am going back again with my family in summers!
I visited matheran last week with my family and stayed at Vakratund Cottage. This was my first visit to matheran and i came to know about this cottage from my friends who had visited earlier. The owner Mr Rajan Rane is a very kind and helpful person. He personally came to receive us at dasturi (entrance of Matheran). The rooms were self contained. All the necessary amenities were provided. The place itself is very close from Matheran Station and Market. So visiting and sight seeing was convenient. The food that was served was awesomely delicious and the best part was it was included in the overall travel package. Rajan Uncle also helped us in making the best of our limited time in matheran and in sightseeing and also gave us train details for our return journey. I will definitely stay at this place if i visit matheran again and recommend to whoever plans to go there.
So beautyfull view and i see sun rise in window i like that, service is good nature so beautyful, and fresh.air i was very happy to stay in matheran , hotal is nice, but road is so denger, urly morning was so romantic , i will go next time definetly in matheran
We visited this place with my friends last month in august from 17th to 19th.I booked this lodge on the basis of previous reviews. At the time of booking Rane kaka informed me about all the services he provide..and planned our 2 days trip starts with timings of train to reach to dasturi naka. He himself came to receive us to dasturi naka ..and the environment was also very awsome...we start our trip with a beautifull view of nature from omni car which coats 70 rs per person and the railway track walk till loudge at 9.am of 10 mnts was also very refreshing.Rane kaka gave us all information about matheran and we discussed our plan in that walk. We booked 2 rooms which was adjoining rooms and are of decent quality. We started our trip with kande pohe and we started our trip.We visited close points by walk and enjoyed a lot..Every point is filled with a fog, cold and little of shower, which feels like refreshing. Th special attraction of the trip is a food which is made by Rane kaki..specilly chicken curry, bhakri, vangyachi bhaji, kheer, special egg prepration(i forgot the name),thecha ,koshimbir, and lots of ..The food was awsommmmmm..mady by mummys hand. The hospitality and caring of Rane kaka and Rane kaki feela homely, courtious, and heart touching.i am pleased with the service i experienced while my trip.We stayed there for one more day,and enjoyed the environment and experience. Overall the experience is best one for me and my friends.we surely will visite vakratund again next year.and also we know we have a secured place in matheran to stay..
I visited matheran last weekend with my college friends and it was worth visiting! Such a memorable getaway to cherish! We had a stay at Vakratund guesthouse which is close to Dasturi and market. It also had a beautiful valley view with decent rooms.Customer service was awesome as Rane uncle (owner) guided and planned our trip so well that we could manage and cover maximum places in limited time. The stay included maharashtrian food (breakfast+lunch+dinner). The food was amazing! specially kande pohe for breakfast and the kheer.I would recommend this place for good healthy scrumptious food and hospitality. Heres their contact details Rajan Rane : 9869947122/9987267818/9920733825. We covered maximum points like one tree hill point,Alexander point, sunset point,Heart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, Rambagh Point and many more.Since it was rainy day,we enjoyed the waterfall at Charlottle lake. Transport facilities available are horses and hand pulled rickshaw since no private vehicles are allowed within matheran. We decided to walk and had fun throughout the foggy nature trail. I would recommend Matheran for Mumbaikars and Punekars as it is close to both the places.
I have spent 2nights &3 days @Vakratund cottage.I could not remember how these days went in full of enjoyment. The most fortunate is that Lovely family & traditional food here. You will never find such taste & family environment anywhere. Overall Vakratund made our vacation truly memorizing. Thanks to Vakratund Cottage & Mr. Rajan Rane. I would like to visit again next year.
There is no swimming pool & there are no servants..!!! Everything is self service...this includes carrying a bucket of water for bathing. We booked the hotel after reading previous reviews on net. I'm wondering whether we stayed in the same hotel or there is any other Vakrutund...!? So first visit the place and only then pay. Definitely not recommended for family.
We were promised a bungalow close to the market with home cooked food and an excellent view. However we received multiple shocks in the form of poor location, tin roof with no Ac giving us a restless night sleep, no facilities in the rooms or bathrooms and clumsy dangerous staircases with an extremely indifferent but very polite owner cum host cum local guide who did none very efficiently. We relied on the internet but repented heavily.
If you are expecting a comfortable cottage with nice facilities, then this is not the place for you. We had booked the cottage for our family holiday in April 2015. We had been attracted by the home cooked food that other reviews talk about, particularly because we have a child with nut allergies. Mr Rane was charming on the phone, assuring us that all would the food would be as per our requirement. He even met us at Dasturi lodge when we arrived and was in contact with the driver to advise him about the route etc. As soon as we got to Dasturi lodge, we were surrounded by coolies and rickshaw –pullers trying to get our custom. We asked Mr Rane for guidance on how much we should expect to pay for the journey as we had no idea how far it was but Mr Rane walked away saying this had nothing to do with him. We walked about 20 mins to get to the cottage which is basically in a settlement some distance (20 mins brisk walk) from Matheran market. It seems to be where a lot of the locals live and is quite congested with houses side to side. The cottage itself consists of 3 interconnecting rooms each with its own tiny bathroom. The bathrooms were smelly when we arrived. Each room had a double or a king-size bed. As we were a family of 6 adults and 2 kids, we had booked all 3 rooms. Mr Rane was insistent that we could have easily been accommodated in 2 rooms and charged us Rs1000 extra per night for the ‘luxury’ of using all three. There was only one bin between the 3 rooms, and no cupboards or shelves to put things on. Individual rooms could not be locked so I am not sure how he rents single rooms out to unrelated parties. The beds were hard, the sheets were ripped and the fans in one of the rooms only moved at the slowest speed. Add to that the fact that there was load-shedding with no back-up and limited water supply! Did I mention that he needed to heat up the water on his gas and charges for it per bucket. There is no outdoor space and there is a constant smell of horses as there are stables all around. There is a dining hall upstairs with spectacular views of the valley. Mr Rane opens the balcony for gorgeous views of the sunrise. There is nothing for kids nearby ( we had been told there was a park, but this turned out to be near Matheran station so the kids were tired out by the time we got there) The food was okay although Mr Rane did not manage to cook nut-free food on the first meal and provided shrikhand with nuts (which the children could not eat!) on the second day. In peak mango season, we were served tinned mango ras that had probably stayed in the tin for too long. The portion sizes for butter-milk were tiny and do not even think of asking for some curd for the kids. Mr Rane’s behaviour during our stay appeared friendly although he insisted on planning our itinerary sending us off to see far away points without once asking if that is what we wanted. On the second afternoon, we decided to stay in and had a very uncomfortable time (the tin roof gets very hot). Add to that the fact that Mr and Mrs Rane had called a builder to do some tiling work on the cottage whilst we were there! I guess he wanted us to be out all afternoon so this was not noticed. We had booked for 3 nights but ended up booking a hotel and moving out of Vakratund at 10 pm on the second night just so we could have a comfortable night’s sleep. We were promised a bungalow close to the market with home cooked food and an excellent view. However we received multiple shocks in the form of poor location, tin roof with poor ventilation giving us a restless night sleep, no facilities in the rooms or bathrooms and clumsy dangerous staircases with an extremely indifferent but very polite owner cum host cum local guide who did none very efficiently. We relied on the internet but repented heavily
superb stay it was in matheran....stayed for 2 nights with family..it was a weekend stay and we all had fun staying here..good food, nice service..food was nice..staff was polite and friendly, prompt to the call..room was spacious and clean with god view of the swimming pool, swimming pool was big and well maintained..highly recommended for all..
This place is a cluster of few cozy cottages, with more of a home like setting, rather than some star hotel amenities. So if you are looking for relaxing on a cozy bed and taking a dip into the swimming pool, this place is not for you. But if you want a personal homely treatment, hot home made food and a simple and clean place to sleep and explore matheran, this is the best choice. I found it really a value for money. We were in Matheran by 9:45 and were welcomes by Mr. Rajan Raane at the tax office. It was nice to have been escorted to the destination and the cool pleasant breeze was more than welcoming. On the first day, after a long walk, what we wanted was a nice, and healthy meal and our host didn't disappoint us. We had a nice "chavali chi aamti",hot "chapati"s, "daal" and "papad", a very homely Maharashtrian meal. The long walk, healthy meal and cool breeze made us little relaxed and then lethargic, getting into a good afternoon slumber. On Sunday, Mr Rajan Rane treated us with “Malavani chicken†and Rice, Rotis and we savored the authentic and homely food, praising Rane Kaakoos culinary skills generously. This was truly a home away from home for us and Mr.Raane, didn't leave any gaps in his hospitality.
Matheran in Monsoon has its own beauty, this I had heard. This I experienced, when I was on the way to Dasturi from Neral Station on 13th of July 13. With scenic views of Lush green mountains and running water falls around the mountain, we reached Dasturi. From Dasturi to our destination was Matheran and that to Vakratund Cottage of Mr Rajan Rane. Although I have my well equipped lavish corporate Guest House at Matheran, however we decided to go to this cottage, with obvious reason for the usual warmth and homely atmosphere which we had experienced in our previous trip. We were received by them at Dasturi with usual warmth and charm. With 15 mins of walk we reached the cottage. There we started deciding where to go, in rain and what to see . Then the owner called us on his first floor mezzanine of his cottage. The floor has wide sliding windows which directly open to the valley. It was really a heavanic view. The whole back yard is surrounded by lush green mountain. Various water falls coming from the mountain falling to the valley was clearly visible. Amazing scene was when we saw the formation of fog in the deep valley moving up, changing the back drop scene every moment. In the trip of three days we strolled to some scenic spots as usually people do, however, no scenic spot we found can be compared to the back yard scene of the cottage. We often sat at the mezzanine, enjoying the backdrop.. This time we tried Non- Veg preparation by them. It was as delicious as Veg item we had tried in our previous visit. Even my wife learned some culinary art. This whole experience always ensures to visit to Vakratund cottage next time we go to Matheran.
