Vasota Fort is one of the major tourist attractions located in the Satara District of Maharashtra; amidst the deep forests and valleys of Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. Situated nearby Shivsagar Lake, at an altitude of 1200 m, Vasota Fort is surrounded by water on three sides.
Known also as Vyaghragad Fort, Vasota Fort was built by King Bhojraj II of Shilahar Dynasty. Later it came under the control of Chhatrapati Shivaji, in the year 1656. Vasota Fort comprises of three main forts - Juna Vasota (Old Fort), Navin Vasota (New Fort) and Nageshwar. Vasota Fort, now in ruins, is famous for its traditional Maharshtrian architectural style.
