"Don't give this place amiss"

  • 7.00/7

In Shantiniketan and if you do not visit this place you are missing the whole charm of the place. You are completely missing the values, the rich history, the ethos that Shantiniketan stands for. You are at the abode of the great poet and giving his creation a miss is not doing justice to yourself. Please hire a guide available there (they are recruited by the authority and carry an id card), the rate is fixed so you can ask them for a receipt and to show you the charges.

The guides have immense knowledge about the place and surroundings and there are different trips available, so you can choose whatever suits you.

If you are old or have a problem walking, i would suggest you do not take this trip as this calls for a lot of walking. You can otherwise relax inside the complex (you will miss a great details though). The guides will tell you where Rabindra Nath Tagore (the great poet) wrote his genius creations.

Please carry umbrellas, water, camera for your and be ready for walking!

Cheers,

Debasis SilShantiniketan is a great place to relax and to be with yourself. Its the place to unwind yourself from the pace of city life.

My travel to Shantiniketan always give me that inner peace.

Rater Tara Diner Rabi gives the perfect ambience for that. Very homely and the best part is the beautiful garden in front of the guest house. Even better when its in full bloom.

Staffs are very friendly and so is the proprietor. They have free wifi, comfy rooms (stay at first floor), food is homely (but try eating outside also - shantiniketan have some great eateries, Shakuntala, Banalakshmi and theres another restaurant just beside the movie hall in shantiniketan), car parking is also no problem.

We stay there during most of our visits in Shantiniketan. The place is a bit pricy but we love the place.

Ask the hotel for arranging a Boul song evening. Every time we go there we try to arrange one and its so refreshing! You need to pay the Boul team separately as guest house does not pay that. But its not so expensive ( you need to negotiate). Also you can try Adivasi dance and songs (local tribal dance and songs) - I have never tried though. They (the tribals) try to charge more (you need to bargain heavily).

Also try for the Saturday Haat (market). It will be a great experience near the Khowai. You can also visit the Kopai river and if you are lucky you can get a Boul singer there. Sit there, have tea and listen to bowl song (you need to pay the bowl) . The experience will be worth it.

Please take a trip to the University with the guides available. The guides come with a price but the experience will be worth it. You will get to know the richness and history of Shantiniketan and Rabindra Nath Tegore.

Cheers and find peace in Shantiniketan.

It was nice visiting the Visva Bharati University Campus once again. We were thinking if we could have a chance to be re admitted in University again and start all over again. The place always strikes a chord.

The entire place is the various departments of the university. The fine arts classes can be observed. You don't pay anything for the university itself but the museums.

About Visva Bharati University

The Visva Bharati University at Shantiniketan is world famous and is acknowledged as one of the greatest temples of learning in Fine art and Literature in India. Founded by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1901, the university has always defined the standards of literary excellence and its fine arts division carries on the Gurudev's tradition of uncompromising and unparalleled standards of excellence.

Maharshi Debendranath, father of Rabindranath Tagore, founded an Ashram here in 1863. Almost 40 years later, his son Rabindranath started an open-air school here that gradually blossomed into an international university where the cultures of the East and the West meet in common fellowship. The university today is a center of international culture and studies and has two campuses, one at Shantiniketan and another at Sriniketan.

The sprawling campus houses several institutions dedicated to different aspects of Arts and Culture -  Patha Bhavana, Uttar Siksha Sadana, Siksha Bhavana, Vidya Bhavana, Vinay Bhavana, Kala Bhavana, Sangeet Bhavana, Rabindra Bhavana, China Bhavana, Hindi Bhavana etc.

The Vichitra Museum houses the personal effects and a good collection of photographs of the Gurudev. The Nandan Art Gallery displays some of Tagore’s works along with murals, paintings, frescoes and artistic tributes by Ramkinkar, Nandlal Bose et al.

Following the Gurukul tradition, classes at the university are conducted outdoors. Many a great literary genius and music maestro has visited this temple of learning and gone back inspired or moved by its cultural ethos.
