Taj Bekal Resort & Spa, Bekal
Kappil Beach Kasargod, Bekal
This is a wonderful place for spending quality time with family or friends. The nearest airport to Bekal is Managlore which is about 2 hours away. The drive from the airport to Kasargod and Bekal in the Malabr region was quite scenic. Location of Taj Bekal is just amazing- one can access the serene backwaters as well as the beach easily from the hotel. There are many activities including canoeing and paddle boating which one could do here (at an extra cost). We spent most of our time exploring the beautiful property and walking beside the backwaters or at the quiet Kapilla beach. The staff is polite and the service top notch. Well worth the effort and money spent
Awesome stay - I had visited this place with my partner and not regretted a bit. Great place to stay and unwind. Rooms - Very spacious and lovely rooms, the wall paintings in the room are just awesome and the bathtub outside the room is lovely. Huge and big bathrooms are splendid. The eye for detail in rooms are perfect though the speed of ceiling fan should be more, as being a coastal area at times the A/C won't be effective. Food - Not to be missed and rather the USP. Home like cooking without too much of spices and oil. Breakfast spread is big with local delicacies there make it a must. One should try the Sadhya organised by hotel (chargeable). Public Area/Beach - Clean however, as I had visited in Monsoon, had seen some dip in services. Still housekeeping's job is really difficult in this place. Hats off to the team. Room Tip: Take a room with pool facing backwater.
After having been to other parts of Kerala, we decided to explore the less visited land of Bekal in Kasargod. Known for its virgin beaches, lagoons and backwaters, it did not disappoint us. This is the only place where you will be able to walk along white sandy beaches with water bodies on both your sides - backwaters on one and ocean on the other. Right from the welcome by affable GM Samir Khanna to the time we left, we were made to feel important, most comfortable and cared for. Our Premium Indulgence Villa was spacious and plush. The only snag was I missed my fave tv channel Colors as it was not available. More than 600sq ft area of outdoor space to our villa gave us a feeling of openness and privacy. Lounge chairs facing landscaped greenery, a large bed swing coupled with an infinity plunge pool in our villa complex served to enhance a relaxed holiday mood. Buffet meals at Latitude restaurant were lavish and varied. Breakfast items were lavish and I loved the flavored yogurts with fruit compotes. But during lunch and dinner times, the dessert counters could have offered some Indian mithais. Chefs Ashok Pillai and Santosh served us the local sell-out of Thalacherry Biryani and Kebabs - and yes they were worth trying. For lunch the next day, we dug into Kerala Sadya on banana leaves at Ivory Tower - except for some mix ups, it was good. We asked for a repeat of bittergourd chips and they did not arrive at all. The dishes need a dash of liberal seasoning. Make it a point to take early morning beach walks, avail of the naturalist's expertise if you are a bird watcher and don't miss canoeing and kayaking activities on Kappil river and even try your hand at angling and catching fishes like snappers and karimeen. The resort's itinerary included a visit to the famous Bekal Fort. If personal touch can do wonders, then this is it. We had a splendid time and highly recommend Vivant by Taj as it lives up to a luxe lifestyle!
We stayed for 3 nights between Nov 7th to Nov 10th 2015 at the Taj Vivanta Bekal at Kasargod Kerala. The property by itself is a wonderful one. Spread over 26 acres, the property is touching the backwaters and the beach. It is 2 hours from Mangalore Airport though I daresay if the roads had been better the journey could have been done in 1 and half hours! On reaching the property I was actually a little disappointed as it does not immediately blow you away as some properties do. The approach is a little narrow (within the village). And it does not have a polished clean finished look as I am accustomed to of business hotels, (but then this isn't a business hotel). It has a rustic look and feel about it. Our room had a plunge pool and an outdoor swing (jhoola bed). The room itself I thought for a villa is a little small. It always helps to have 1 and 1/2 room with a couch kind of a thing. Nevertheless the washroom was big and the dressing area well placed within the room. I loved the placement of the bathtub. It was outdoor beside the plunge pool. The kids (3 and 6 years) don't know swimming so I would suggest for those with kids who don't know how to swim be a little careful as the plunge pool is deep (5 feet or so). There is an access to an outdoor shower in this room which leads to the indoor shower which is of great help when you want to quickly shower outside and go into the pool. The only thing I didn't like at all was the lighting and the smart switches. Took a really long time to figure them out (tough to handle especially in the dead of the night). Other than that the room was great. The property itself has a lot to do. One can do archery, kayaking on the backwaters, go to the beach. There is an activity room for the kids where they can play, paint the walls, etc. To move across the property you can use an electric buggy that comes in around 10 mins from the time of request. Getting out of the property on your own is tough if you want local transport. I ventured out once in the afternoon and there was no transport outside the hotel premises (as you see in many hotels across India). I had to walk around 250 mts. And by luck got an auto rickshaw who a little reluctantly took me to the local restaurant around 1. 5 km away. The hotel provides transport but the minimum is for 2 hours and obviously far more expensive than local transport. Spectacular service. The staff service was wonderful! They were attentive, responsive and very helpful and friendly. Typical of all the star hotels I have been to in India. When they could not provide a baby cot for the 3 year old they changed it with a full size mattress which was very useful. We asked for morning milk for all 3 days from the breakfast room which was delivered to our room complementary. The food quality and choices were excellent at the buffet. All in all, the experience was a very good one. I daresay more than 4 nights might make one feel it is a bit too much as there is precious little to do outside the resort other than going to see the Bekal fort. If you are OK with just chilling in the resort and the beach, lazing all day in the pool or generally doing nothing, it is a very good option. As a footnote I must add that star property holidays in India are really expensive and maybe unnecessarily so! Despite this being a package with a leading credit card with discounts built it (and a few freebies thrown in) it was still a steep 25K per night! At those prices I would think Sri Lanka or Maldives and Bali are a far better option. I think Indian hotel chains really need to revisit the prices of their packages else they may lose out to closer to home foreign destinations.
We stayed at the Vivanta by Taj at Bekal, just at the onset of the New Year in the first week, and it was a fantastic start to the year to say the least. We had gone for a 4 day relaxing stay, and we got what we expected from Vivanta and more. Firstly, the resort works as a complete ecosystem in itself - you don't need to step out even for a moment, and they make your experience of Kerala complete! What we loved the most is that aside from the regular luxuries of a 5-star accommodation, and the expected services of a Taj, there was so much more to do right inside - from cycling trips along the pretty beach, to archery and kayaking inside, you could decide to either chill by the pool or indulge in these. About the rooms, we stayed in the Superior Charm rooms to start with, and later upgraded ourselves to the Plunge Pool room - a mini-villa experience with a pool of your own - and worth every penny spent! If you're looking for a few days break away from the city, Vivanta by Taj Bekal is the perfect getaway, only a couple of hours drive away from Mangalore - pliss to indulge!
