Wayanad food, sight-seeing and shopping options
Kerala cuisines are a must try but there aren't too many great hotels where you will get good food but its not bad either.. The focus here is not on food but the sights that you can go to like the Edakkal Caves, Soochipara Falls etc.. You can also shop for various kinds of tea and coffee powder with spices like pepper, cardamom and the likes

Hotel Review of Edakkal Hermitage
Comments: After reading up on a list of hotels and the facilities available, we decided to book our weekend stay from Aug 8 – 10 at Edakkal Hermitage Resort. Bookings done, and all in place we reached a little after 2 pm on a overcast afternoon after a 6 hour drive from Bangalore.
As soon as we reached the gates of the resorts, 2 members from the staff immediately came up and helped us with our luggage and escorted us to the reception. After the preliminaries, we were chaperoned to our room which was a secluded cottage (amongst the 8, with us staying at the 'Kapova'), and our luggage was already in the room.
The verandah of the cottage was washed and clean, so was the room. A tony room with just about enough space and fixtures sans television was a relieving experience. Within minutes we were back at the café for our late lunch – a sumptuous meal which was made as endearingly as you would feel when you visit your native home, complete with dessert. The staff was extremely amiable, and ensured we had our meal to our content; we were presumably the last set of people that afternoon. Very soon it started raining and we were back in our room for the rest of the evening.
As soon as the rain subsided we chatted with the manager – Roopesh, an affable and very forthcoming young lad in his early twenties with information on all places to visit during our stay. Since the trek to Edakkal caves was ruled out due to the rain for the day, he suggested we visit it the next day with a trip to the Mathanga wildlife sanctuary. He also recommended we spend time at the club house for the evening till dinner was served. The meal was as satisfying as the lunch with a mix of vegetarian and non vegetarian delicacies - we were so full not just with the food but also with bonhomie staff, we could barely walk back to our room. The café is kept clean, tidy and the buffet well laid out with utmost attention to hygiene.
After we came back from our trek to Edakkal caves the next day, we again took suggestions from Roopesh for our day’s program, which included a trip to the Mathanga wildlife sanctuary. With barely any animals to view due to the rains except cheetals, wild deer, boar we were back to the hermitage resort.
That evening’s dinner was one of most cherishable evenings we spent in candle light which is in a cave under a huge rock, with well laid out table and candles all around us in the cave. It couldn’t get more romantic than that! As we eagerly looked forward to the food, we couldn’t wait to finish the sumptuous dinner with delicious fish, chicken curry and many other mouth watering dishes. The staff also courteously left us alone to savour the moment with candles around us in the dark – an absolutely brilliant rendezvous that the resort has re-created.

Best Experience: What you must look forward:
- Delicious food at all meal times – authentic kerala food can’t get better!
- Courteous, generous staff providing all support throughout the stay
- Clean, and neat rooms with gas powered geysers providing sufficient hot water
- Lovely set up of cottages across the area (we would recommend the secluded one ‘Kapova’ for it’s eeriness and solitude). It overlooks the lush, green terrain
- Misty mornings that embrace you as soon as you open your eyes
- Huge trees all around with a variety of birds hovering around in the morning

Worst Experience: - None: Only when you realize that you are done with your scheduled stay, you wish you were here longer!

It’s a little away from most places of Wayanad, but if you wish to spend quality time and relish nature’s bounty with the basics in place – Edakkal Hermitage Resort is the place to be.

Staying in the tree house was a thrilling experience. We enjoyed the shaky room immensely. The room was simple and neat without a TV. We could imagine how the tribals live in a tree house. During the night we were bit scared and hoped that there are no gusty winds. But it was just our feeling everything went really well there....

Wayand is probably the best place to watch the rains. It was towards the end of monsoons and the entire area was a lush green, the climate was superb and the bird calls were aplenty. Since the resort is at a height, you get a birds eye view of the villages and towns below....

Great place, great destination with a lovely view of the mountains. The drive through Wynad and its tea gardens is amazing. There is not much for the kids to do at the resort and they tend to get bored. The candlelight dinner inside the caves is worth experiencing....
