"We were trying to get..."

We were trying to get accomodation at the Oriental a couple of months ahead of our planned visit. I should mentioned the reservations team were extremely patient and helpful in taking our repeated requests with at most priority. 'Mr.Dawa' the man in charge reminded me of an insurance company who was giving a commitment (Dawa in Hindi) that our reservation requests would be confirmed in due course since we were waitlisted.

Best Experience: Quite a few of them 1. Lovely low seating in the restaurant that served amazing Dal. Most relishing after a day long tiresome drives and treks. 2. Good collection of travelogues, books and magazines at the in house library

Worst Experience: Lathergic late evening staff who were not available to help us carry luggage to the taxi parked outside.

"Leh is paradise on earth..."

Leh is paradise on earth and there is no doubt about that!

Best Experience: The owner Dawa and his family & crew are the most helpful and trusting people you will come across. Their hospitality is amazing! The rooms are clean, the food - decent and the views from the guest house are breath taking. Reading a book or listening to music while soaking in the sun in the kitchen garden is an absolute delight!

Worst Experience: None...

"Its really nice to stay..."

  • Posted Oct 11, 2009
Its really nice to stay Oriental. In my earlier Leh stay four years back there was a hotel without electricity, running water etc. in comparison Oriental is a heaven. Nice to see the improvement in electricity. The rooms (we stayed in Building C0 are great with good view even from bathroom. But there is a catch! though all rooms on the building bears same price, the ground floor rooms are about a metre short in length as compared to first and second floor rooms. The ground floor ones do not offer views either. The breakfast (included in our tariff) was great and filling, particularly the Oriental Special Breakfast. However dinner was not good. May be the food stuff (vegetables) are good, kitchen staffs are sincere, but cold nights at Leh deserve some other tastes as dinner.

Best Experience: Excellent behaviour of Dawa & his team. Always smiling and ready to serve you. Its wonderful to see how they keep such a huge property clean. The garden is beautiful. Food is less spicy and easy to digest. The Water Filter facility at the lounge.

Worst Experience: Waiting for/ jumping into dining hall in the evening. As city dwellers we are not habituated at 8 PM dinner, but if anyone goes after 9PM there a chance to notice empty containers or cold dal-rice. Though kitchen staff are cordial and tried to serve hot meals even at 10PM (on request), the whole process could be improved.

"Ladakh is the best place..."

  • Posted Sep 15, 2009
Ladakh is the best place I have visited till date. Unxploited and pristine. This guest house doesn\'t entertain indian tourists well; I had heard of this but still ignored that as one off case and booked it. However now I also agree with this sentiment. They (staff as well as owners) are actually not bothered about Indians. They should very clearly advertise \'Indians come at your own risk\'

Best Experience: They have good kitchen garden.

Worst Experience: 1. Rude behaviour by kitchen staff till the time we paid them huge tips. This is absurd, as you pay tip while leaving for the gud service received during your stay and not in the beginning to get any service. 2. food menu has been desgined for foreign tourists, only continental bkfast is available. 3. Kitchen staff (whom we didn\'t pay tip) misbehaved with us and said something really derogatory; but neither the owner nor the manager bothered to resolve the issue. We left the place at that moment and checked into another hotel nearby to save our vacation.

"Leh was everything we heard..."

Leh was everything we heard and read about and more.... The guest house itself was amazing! You dont need air-conditioning in Leh! You need serene surroundings, clean rooms, friendly and efficient service.. You get all of that there. Overall Great Value for Money. I would recommend every traveller to check it out before they decide to shell out thousands in going to a hotel. If you need some luxury, then try and get a room in the new wing (Wing C). It is slightly expensive (650), but definitely worth it. Other wings are also good. Just suit your pocket.

Best Experience: Service of the Guest houst staff, led by Dawa was so efficient and friendly, that made you feel at home instantly. The place runs on trust! (Well that\'s true for the whole Laddakh, not just this place)

Worst Experience: Food was a dissappointment, especially for a North Indian, who wants to eat his Dal-Roti, after some time. If you like Continental food, or are willing to try new cuisines, you wont have a problem.
